I'm looking for suggestions for my daughters 5th birthday. She loves music and sings all the time. She also likes dress up. I am completely out of ideas and her birthday is coming up fast. She has not asked for anything, which is great but I don't have a clue what to get her for her birthday. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks
Go to musicforlittlepeople.com. They have great, non-commercial type stuff, from CDs to dress-up to kid-sized real musical instruments.
last year I bought a bunch of instruments for my daughters birthday... she loves to play music! they have cute sets at target, they also have harmonicas for $2 which actually play really pretty music. we also got as a gift a cat keyboard which is always a hit with the kids!
This year (her birthday is wednesday) we are buying an acoustic guitar. I just saw they will be on sale at Toys R us for $20 starting July 2nd.
I like the basic music instrument ideas.
Another thing would be the dress up clothes, but instead maybe take her to a thrift shop and get real clothes for dress up time. Silly shirts, hats, pants, skirts, shoes etc. Then supplement it with the expensive stuff at Toys r us like the princess crowns etc.
This will take a lot of patience on your part to endure but a recorder, mini piano, or those musical instrument sets they sell at Target seem fitting.
They have tons of dress up stuff at Toys'r'Us from Barbie to Princess to you name it...it is there. If she is turning 5 she might like a mini makeup kit with lip gloss and some fun eyeshadow (they sell them in the toy areas of most stores).
The other ladies gave you great advice. I was playing piano at 6 and kept taking lessons till I was 18. My mom gave me, at I think that age, a gold charm to wear on bracelet or necklace of the treble clef. That's a keepsake and something your daughter could wear for years. I did and sometimes dig it out and put it on a gold chain. Food for thought.

How about a keyboard. We bought a Casio keyboard when our daughter was 4 or 5 at Best Buy and she STILL plays that thing. It was a great investment.

How about an inexpensive mp3 player. You could load it with music she likes.
My niece 5 and my daughter almost 5 love their MP3 players. You can even purchase inexpensive speakers for it.
My 5 yr. old is in a piano class and the instructor recommended a 61-key keyboard for at-home practice (she said that size will serve her well for at least the next 3 years since we have no piano at home). She loves it!!! It was $99 at Target. We also have a few kids' instrument sets that get a lot of use (Melissa & Doug brand makes a nice one sold at Toys R Us).
I think a keyboard is a great idea. Or, if you have access to a regular piano, this is a great age to start piano lessons!

It's a really nice book, plus it comes with a CD containing a reading of the book and a lot of musical selections highlighting all of the different instruments. The book teaches a lot about instruments and different styles of music. It comes with a card game as well to take it one step further and really get into the story.
