JFF: Even When You Don't Have Your Kids, You Find Yourself Doing...

During my last-minute rounds of holiday shopping, I found myself again at Target, and heading straight toward the "vacooms," as my DD calls them. But I had no intention of buying one!

I was an autopilot and was so conditioned to fulfill her request only to realize that I was alone. DD was with my MIL. Yet, I was still on "vacoom" overdrive. Repeat for teapots!

I forgot what it's like to shop alone and miss her!

So what's your mommy moment?

What can I do next?

I "wore" my daughter and she loved to be rocked. It took me so long to stop rocking when I was standing in line at the grocery store - I probably looked ridiculous and/or mentally ill.

I still sway back and forth when standing anywhere. My co-workers call me on it all the time and remind me that I don't have to do the mommy sway at work. My youngest is 5!

I also answer to Mom automatically even when my kids aren't with me. I find myself absently responding "hold on a second honey" to some strange child who is addressing his or her own mom.

When I am driving myself (and I forget I'm by myself) or when I'm driving with just my husband I catch myself saying "school bus!" or "truck" or "Christmas lights!". Also, when I'm shopping by self I will catch myself rushing through my list as if I was with my kids whom I anticipate will only last so long in a store before a meltdown or crazy-ness pursues! I usually will catch myself and remember that I'm by myself and to take my sweet time! :)

I answer to MOM even at work and I know my kids are not there.

I do the Mommy sway whenever I hear a crying baby.

I run when I hear that certain yell or bumb that says "I'm hurt"

My baby is 20--though my grandkids are 10-9-3-1.

OOO and I sing or hum "Hush little baby.... when I hear a baby cry.

At least I took the diaper out of the glove box. Kept it there 'just in case' for years. :-))

I am hardly EVER without my kids. They are still pretty small (5 and 2). We live away from family and my husband works all the time, so on the very rare occasion that I do get out without kids, I always start off enjoying being out shopping by myself. I eventually always get lost in my thoughts and then suddenly get a split second of panic after suddenly realizing they aren't with me and I think that I lost them or forgot them somewhere. Then I'm finally relieved when I I rememeber that they are safe at home with dad, or whoever I left them with.
I also end up leaving the Raffi CD playing in the car and sing along to it even when the kids aren't there.

I talk to my daughter in the backseat but she's not there. lol

I napped on the couch the other day and woke up several times to make sure my daughter was behaving but she was with my husband. Habits are hard to break!

i do the exact same thing as J B. I will be out and about and if i tea a kid saying mooom? i turn and say yeah baby? yes, i am that crazy lady talking to your kids when they call for you.
also, if i am in a store and i hear a child crying, i immediately assume it's mine. but mine are not with me. i don't listen to kids' music thank god. my kids are 7 now and we can listen to the radio.

I am such a mom that I treat my high school students like my own children. Often they slip and call me "Mom." I take it as a compliment. :)

I always put my hand out to the side when crossing the street or crossing a parking lot, whether alone or with big kids who don't take my hand anymore :(

And I will listen to my son's pop radio station for several songs, singing along, before I realize I'd rather listen to my classical station.
