Iud - Stratford,CT

So I recently asked about the mirena IUD. Thank you everyone for all your answers. I have decided to get it put in on 12/23, however I am really nervous about how painful it is with the insertion. Does anyone have any tips on how to decrease the pain or was it "not that bad". I know I just had a child so I should be able to tol pain, but I had an epidural.

Also- I am getting it put in at almost 8 weeks post partum, however my MD like to wait until almost 10 wks PP because he said the uterus can be perforated. Anyone else had their MD say this? At how many weeks PP have other women got their IUD's placed?

Thank you

So What Happened?

So I wanted to let everyone know that I got the mirena IUD placed on 12/23. It has almost been a week with no issues. I occasionally have period like cramps in the AM, however after reading your posts I guess this may go one for a little while. Insertion was not to painful. I took the motrin before and I think that really helped. My milk supply has remained steady. So far so good and glad I got it. No worries about having another baby right now (since my son just turned 8wks we need some time b/f we are ready to try for #3).

Hi,

I had my first IUD put in after two and a half months after my first baby was born (about 10 weeks),but something was wrong so the doctor took it out.I`m sorry to tell you,it was painful.(maybe take a painkiller before).
Now I`m back in Hungary,I had my second baby and I`m waitaing for my IUD to be put in the second time.My doctor said I have to wait until my first menstrual cycle. They say it to everyone in this country.I gave birth in May and now I`m waiting for my PAP test result, because it is necessery for the IUD.Howw countries are different? I`m worried too because of the pain,so I really understand how you feel.

Hi S.,

8-10 weeks is good for the insertion. However, the pain was the last thing I concerned myself about; my ob/gyn just asked me to cough and it was in. My problems after that were excessive vaginal discharge and weight gain. After having a baby, weight gain is something you just don't want to entertain. I'm not saying you'll experience the same things since everyone's different. I just want you to be aware of the fact that for some women there are side effects. My doctor had it done herself and has kept it in for 7+ years without any problems. I on the other hand noticed the effects immediately and therefore was forced to have mine removed. Hope this helps.

I don't remember having pain when it was inserted, but I did have period-like cramps for about 3 months afterwards (on and off, not constant). I remember thinking that I wanted it taken out b/c the cramping was so annoying and just about the time I had made that decision, the cramping stopped. I've heard from others that the cramping feeling is normal and usually happens for up to three months, so don't worry about that....
I'm not sure how far after giving birth I had the IUD put in. I do know that after you get you first period with the IUD (which is typically heavier than normal), you need to get it checked to make sure it doesn't move out of place.

I also noticed some posters mentioned messing around with hormones. It depends on the type of IUD you have. Because I have various blood clotting disorders, I can't use hormones (hence, can't take the pill). The IUD I have is a 10-year hormone free one.

Hi S.,
Mine was put in after 3 months, and I have one of those horror stories but a solution too... This isn't to scare you, but to let you know something the doctors gloss over. Having mine put in hurt but mentally I told myself that it's 60 periods all in less than a minute. What I didn't know is that it's expected for you to have a 3-month-long period after insertion. For me, I couldn't stand up straight for the first 5 days because of the cramps, not to mention going through bag after bag of pads. And, for me, I bled consistently for a full year after exercise or intimacy (talk about a de-motivator!). I finally found a physician's asst who told me to take full doses of Motrin for several days, and that stopped the bleeding!!! Yay! I've now had 3 months with no problems at all (except for a mild period while on vacation). So -- I think it was worth it, but be prepared. Especially with having it put in on the 23rd -- I hope you don't have any plans for Christmas. If you do, you might want to postpone until after the big day. Good luck to you.

I have a Mirena and I really love it. Just be aware you may have several months of irregular bleeding afterwards. My periods were all over the place for the first 3-6 months, but my sister-in-law who's a doctor said bear with it, it will ease up. She was right, everything settled down and although I still get a period it is much lighter that before, and also I hardly get PMS at all, whereas before I really suffered with it.
Also my husband complained he could feel the threads (Which are actually fine wire) during sex, but again after a few months this settled.

Hi S....I recently had the para gard inserted and yes, it is painful, but tolerable. You could try taking some Motrin beforehand. It all takes place in less than 5 minutes. You might have some cramping afterwards. I would wait until 10 weeks postpartum as your doctor suggested. Good Luck!

I had an IUD for almost 10 years and LOVED it. I don't remember pain with insertion and there was just a little discomfort taking it out. I only removed it because my husband had a vasectomy! Don't worry you will be fine! Good luck.

I had one inserted 4 years ago, and don't recall it being any more painful than a pap smear. Honestly, I might have had cramping for a few seconds during the insertion, but nothing more than that.
If you're concerned, you could take some motrin about 20-30 mins. prior to your appointment.

I didn't have it inserted pp, so not sure about your other question.

:)

Hi S.,
Back in 2004 I had my son via c-section October. Just before New Years I had the IUD put in. I was slightly uncomfortable. Nothing an Advil didn't cure. It felt more like an uncomfortable cramping period day.
Hope this helps. Best of luck! Merry Christmas.

Make sure you do a little research on the product before going through with it. I've recently spoken with a few people who've had mixed reactions. There's patient information required for the company to have available to the public for all marketing purposes. Ask your OB/GYN what the risks are - you're putting something into your body that is going to affect your hormones.

Good luck with your decision. Just want you to have all the facts before hand - especially since your hormones are still raging for several weeks postpartum.

I don't remember it being bad at all. I just tried to relax and breathe. Funny, I get mine out tomorrow! Yay! The string was poking my husband at first (it's a stiff plastic), so they trimmed it, now they can't find the string. They actually have to go into my uterus under ultrasound to get it out. I'm a little anxious about that, but figure I'll just relax and breathe again!

I have the mirena iud for about 2 years now. It is wonderful. I think its great. I would listen to my ob/gyn doctor as to how long to wait to insert it. It feels like pinching when they put it in. When you are going to get it inserted, as your ob/gyn doctor if you can take advil before your appointment time. It is very much worth the little pinching pain at first for the easiness that having it gives you. I don't believe in pills, or medicines so please believe that if I recommend it, it is great. Enjoy this safe and easy way of life... lol....:)

I used a Mirena IUD about 5 years ago. I had a few different pros and cons depending on your point of view. I know a lot of people have complained about the weight gain with them, but I didn't have that problem any more then normal. One thing that bothered me afterwords was that there is a slow release chemical in it that thins the uterine lining. So that fertilized eggs cannot implant. As someone who is prolife and believes life begins at conception I was very upset about this. If your beliefs are different then this should not be a problem for you. I was also one of the 20% that did not have a period beginning about 3 months after having inserted. I also stopped ovulating so then I didn't have to worry about implantation, which is why now after having it removed for about 6 months I have an appointment to have another Mirena inserted at the beginning of January. I also already know how my body reacts to Mirena and have the confidence that there will be no egg to fertilize.
As far as the pain from insertion, my doctor said to take 2 Tylenol before a came and I have to agree it was no more painful then a pap. Now removal was different. I found it it very painful and ended up laying on the table for several minutes because I was so light headed I couldn't sit up. I had cramping worse then any period for about a week. Then my period went right back on schedule as it had 5 years ago. It did take another 3 months after having it removed before the first time I ovulated again.

i had the mirena and wished i knew about it years ago. it was put in with no real pain, just a few hours of slight cramping, like when you get your period. The insertion was similar to getting a pap smear, when they put the clampy thing in. But i was not bedridden or anything. But that was just me. As for when i got mine in, i waited for some time, i forget exactly. I waited because i had a C-section and they wanted to make sure everything was healed.

I am due in Feb and may name my child "Mirena" - i am such a fan.

I had one put in 8 weeks after I delivered too. It's no more painful than getting your annual pap. I however experience a lot of cramping for the first day after it was implanted and some spotting. Since then, I have spotted, had a period,or experienced anything related to getting my period!!!! It has been the best thing for me!! I'm loving it. Had I researched IUDs sooner...I never would have used birth control. Best of luck to you!

I just had the Mirena put in after my daughter was born. It was painful but nothing like contractions. It's over quickly so it's not that bad. My dr wanted to wait until 12 weeks after the birth for the same reason. I had a c section so I do t know if the extra two weeks has anything to do with that. Also be ready for very sporadic bleeding for a while. It hasn't. Been enough for me to use a tampon which is annoying but I've heard that it lasts for a out six months and then you rarely get a period. Good luck! Maybe some advil before you go to help with the pain!

I had the Mirena IUD put in 6 weeks post-partem with no problems at all. With everything comes risks, doctors have to tell you them. Mine did say that the risk of a uterus perforation is very minimal, but it is a risk nonetheless so you have to be forewarned. I had no concerns at all b/c I whole-hearted trusted my midwife to insert it. Be sure you trust your MD as well.

As for pain, I have absolutely no pain tolerance and I was fine. I was told to take a Motrin about an hour prior, which I did. My eyes did not water, I did not clench the table, nothing. It's about as uncomfortable as a yearly exam. Maybe Motrin is a miracle drug... use it and good luck!

I had my IUD put in on 12/2 and OMG its been great. I was 10 wk PP (that was the earliest my OB said she would do it) and I took 4 Ibuprofen's about 30 min before my appt and it was a piece of cake. I felt the same way before my appt my blood pressure was not so good and it was because of my nerves. there was some cramping but nothing compared to back labor! It felt like period cramps to me. I know now getting my first period and I only need to wear a panty liner with some cramping but its been so long since i've had a period i almost forgot what its like to have one, LOL!

I wish you the best!

Hi, I just had my 2nd Mirena put in two days ago, so I am speaking from my VERY recent experience. Also, I have not heard about uterus perforation. I received mine after my 3rd child 12 weeks postparum.

Big hint...take 2 Motrin 1/2 hour before your appointment, I wasnt advised to do anything special before this appointment and the 1st question my Dr. asked when she walked in the room was did you take any Motrin?

So here's the honest deal(from my experiences) my 1st Mirena was put in 5 years ago, I can't remember if they told me to take Motrin before that appointment but it barely bothered me going in at all and absolutely no cramping. I could'nt understand what the big deal was.

My second Mirena (2 days ago) surprised me because it did hurt quite a bit while being inserted for about 30 seconds, not enough to put me into tears but it really did hurt and I did cramp up during and after the procedure. As soon as I left the office I headed straight for the nearest drug store for Motrin to help the cramping. 20 minutes later I felt totally fine.

I have to say that even with the pain that I experienced I would go through the procedure every 6 months if that was the protocal. It is SOOOO worth it, beyond the birth control benefit having no periods, PMS, and no worry's about missing a pill! I think that it is the greatest thing going.

I say go for it...oh yeah, and take your Mortin a 1/2 hour before your appontment. :-D
