OK, so I am not very savvy when it comes to technology. I usually defer to my 13 or 14 yr old for help! haha! That being said, my internet has been telling me for sometime now that I need to update my browser. I currently use Mozilla Firefox and I have tried multiple times to update it. Both from my screen and from the admin screen. Yet, I am still getting the same message! I feel like an idiot and know this should be a fairly simple task! (yes, I do shut down after.)

Any ideas on what I am not doing that I should be? Do I need to uninstall it then just try re-installing? (haven't tried that yet, but think maybe I should?)

TIA for any tips!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sara, mine is set to automatically install updates! Yet it's not and won't let me do it manually! I'm so frustrated!!!! Thanks for trying to help! That should have taken care of it. Every time I try to upload something new or go to certain sites, I'm told my browser is out of date and may in insecure! !#$&%#@$%@#$^%@$%^@#$^@#$%%$^%^^&%^!!!!! (<<that's me swearing, a lot!) haha! Thanks again!

**And I just went and checked and it said my Mozilla was last successfully updated on 2/20/13, so why am I still getting the messages that my browser is out of date? OMG!

If you're in Firefox, go to tools, options, install updates. Mine is set to automatically install updates and I've never had it tell me to update it. It usually updates itself if it needs to when I shut it down.

Is it a pop-up telling you to update your browser? My guess is, that you don't need to update your browser - you need to update your virus scan software. They are trying to get you to click on the pop-up to "update your browser," but you will actually be installing their virus.

Do a virus scan on your computer, and make sure your virus software is all up-to-date. Even if that's not the reason you're getting this, it certainly won't hurt anything to do it.

Then enable your pop-up blocker. You can disable it for specific sites if you have to.

It sounds suspicious to me, like one of those fake things that prompts you through an update but it really installing spyware and malware on your computer. Is your security software up to date? Have you run a check for viruses and malware lately?

I just fixed this problem a little while ago.
Do what they say in the "Firefox is showing the wrong User Agent" and it fixes it right up.

I am not a computer whiz by ANYONE's standards, but I am going to assume you are on a Mac computer, & thus using an OS of theirs (tiger, panther, leopard... pick a cat).

I know I am currently running my laptop on an "old" version of the OS. Because of this, Firefox can only update to a certain level - in order to update to a new version, I first need to update my OS to something more recently released.

If you DO have a Mac system, a quick visit to your local Apple store genius bar could help resolve the issue - they are friendly, knowledgeable & willing to go the extra steps to help you understand hte problem the solution & what to look for next time.

If instead you are using a PC (non-Mac) you might first want to do a Google search on something like "Firefox browser update needed" & see if any of the "hits" match the situation you are experiencing.

Good luck!!

I am pretty dumb when it comes to computers, so this is what our repair guy tells us about the same problem with Firefox (on our 10yo computer):

"No real security threat but we should get you upgraded to 10.6.8. This a stepping block for 10.8."

Just google "download Firefox" and when you are on their site, your option will be to download the most up to date version. Click on something that says "Download Now" or a similar button, and then it should be fairly user friendly. The download program will automatically uninstall the previous version. The problem with Firefox (although I love it and use it exclusively) is that they are CONSTANTLY coming up with new version. I think I've gone from 3.7 to 14.2 in two years. Our online school doesn't approve of Firefox because they can't keep up with their updates.

After looking at your SWH, it sounds like you have a problem with your security software. I don't automatically update Firefox because it causes problem for our school, but I've never gotten a message like that. I even downloaded to Firefox 3 earlier this year to clear up a problem with school, and had no problem running it.

You may need to update your computer's operating software. I start getting messages like that if I haven't upgraded my OS recently. So even if I've updated my browser, it can't update all the way because the most recent browser updates have been written for the latest computer operating system. Does that make sense?

Now, I can only speak to Mac, as that's what all of our computers are around here. If it's a PC, who knows what the issue might be.
