I want to personalize these kids platic lap desks I am giving for Christmas gifts and the paint I tried didn't stick. I thought about using colorful Sharpies which work but really want to use paint. I can get some plastic primer spray paint to prime it but is that safe for the kids? Would enamel work? Any ideas would be great. Thanks moms.

What can I do next?

There is a fabric paint... from craft stores... that comes in little squeeze bottles... on fabric, it leaves a raised or puffy texture.
But on plastic... it will stick. I know, because that is what I have used to 'label' my daughter's plastic water bottles and lunch boxes.

all the best,
Susan

Paint pens would work if that would allow you to decorate how you want them to be. They def look more like paint than sharpies.
Have fun!

Wash the surface well with rubbing alcohol. This will remove dirt, dust and fingerprints. Then spray the surface with a plastic primer...you can get this at Home Depot or Lowes. It's made to adhere to plastics. Then you can paint on that with acrylics or the medium of your choice.

Kyron(sp??) for plastics has a plastic playhouse on the can. It is at walmart and hobby lobby in various colors.

You can use acrylic paints, but you have to add gesso to it. Gesso lets the paint stick to anything. You can get it at Hobby Lobby.

What about stickers?

Acrylic paint works well for detailed projects, but I do suggest sanding the desk beforehand to create a rough texture, as acrylic paint scratches off of smooth surfaces easily. Also, for all over colors, I believe that Krylon(spray paint) makes a paint that chemically bonds to and becomes plastic, and is made for plastics(at least that is what the commercial claimed a few years back)

FYI, I call the Krylon at (800) 247-3268 to find out if it was toxic , if ingested, once paints dries for toddlers ( I used the Krylon Fusion for plastic (with the picture of a kids' playhouse on it, to paint a pink toddler bed found at a garage sale for my grandson)..I was told, once it has cured or dried for 7 days, there would no longer be toxic fumes. They have never done testing on ingested chips, so the answer is unknown, they recommended if it is possible the toddler might chew on it, not to use it, just in case, as there has been not testing done on this. Just so you know, as the label looks it is safe, but if Little Tykes uses it, I guess the the risks are up to you, just be aware.
