I have a very large arch window above my doorway of my new rental home. The problem is I prefer to have it covered for engery efficient and privacy reasons.
I just had a company come out and give me a estimate for covering the window with honeycomb blinds, at first i was thinking i would just need to cover the botton square portion but after taking a walk upstairs that won't work its' all or nothing so they priced it at $577. the window is not easy to get to and most likely need to have professional installation done.
My question is does anyone know of any other options I can explore that is under $600?

What can I do next?

I ordered from this site a couple times, custom window coverings. They give you great directions on how to measure, you give them your measrements, then make your blinds. The ones I've ordered fit perfectly and are very good quality.

Do you have to do an arch-shape blind? You could always just use a regular rectangular blind, if you don't think it will bug you that the light shines in in an arch shape!

Or, they have this cool contact paper (like the stuff you line drawers with but translucent) at Home Depot you can cut and stick right on the window. It comes in designs like clouds or stained glass.

You could try Home Depot, but if the window is really large or irregular shape it will still cost you an arm & a leg plus if you got with their stock stuff they won't install.

if i bought the place i would paint the arch in stain glass paint. sense you didn't use the stain glass or frosted contact paper. another idea is to hang drapes that are bigger than the arch itself. no one will ever know its an arch behind them. you could also hang drapes or blinds in the square/rectangle portion and contact paper the arch. if thats what you have.

My husband and I are landlords and right now we're actually renting too. From a landlord perspective if you do any modifications to the home you should ask the landlord first. It sounds like you're wanting to improve the place which will likely cause the landlord to say 'yes' immediately. Still good to ask. As a renter I caution you to spend so much money on this. I don't know how long you expect to rent, but most house rentals are for one year. This is something you likely can find a solution for under $600. I like someone's idea of contact paper whether it be frosted or stained glass. it'll take work to get it on correctly, but suspect the landlord will be fine with you leaving it on. Again, just ask. It won't be as energy efficient as blackout curtains or something else, but it'll give you the desired privacy. Again, consider the length you're going to be in the house and then determine the cost that makes sense for that time. Good luck!

Love the contact paper idea. But if your house is a rental, you might not want to try that in case it damages the window--?

Does it have to be honeycomb blinds? They can be expensive. Frankly, all custom blinds are pretty expensive (we had light-blocking honeycombs done in our bedroom recently so I know!). Since this is a rental and a unique and therefore uniquely expensive window shape, I would not invest in pricey blinds of even $600, unless you are going to be there for a long time. I like the suggestion that you use regular blinds and leave a gap at the top if that doesn't bother you.
