(all shaker style - headboard, 2 nightstands, large dresser with mirror, large armoire) I want to paint some or change it up but little $ to spend. It is good quality. I need ideas. I don't want to paint it all to match, just repeating my problem.

What can I do next?

A friend of mine stencils her set all the time. She doesn't sand just lightly stencils whatever pattern she wants and changes out the knobs. When she gets tired of it she used a Mr Clean eraser and it comes right off (sometime it does come off a little when she cleans). Then she just puts on a new pattern and new knobs. She rotates between a couple sets of knobs she has used over the years.

I wouldn't paint it. If you do, I'd have it professionally done. I never find it looks right when people do it, unless you're very talented or have professional guidance (like you're taking a course or something).

I myself would spend the money on updating your paint (go with a beautiful color for your walls - like a pretty blue that would set it off), some new fresh artwork and simple clean draperies. New bedspread or quilt.

Then you won't notice your furniture.

I always find that you shouldn't notice your furniture. If it's good quality and classic, it should just be understated and you should notice your decor which you can change up periodically for a lot less.

Sorry - not that helpful, but I love the sound of your furniture.

Having it refinished is going to cost you a lot - and it's not a job that I'd try to do myself.
But then I don't get bored with the color of my wood furniture.
Besides - with pieces we've inherited from one place or another - we've got different wood colors all over the house anyway.
You can change the look of the room without altering the furniture.
Drapes, pillows, bedspread, carpet, a few wall hangings - you won't notice the wood color so much.

if you don't like blond maple any more, i'd sell it and use the $ to buy what you want. i would never paint natural wood furniture.

if you just want to freshen the look of the room, go for all the obvious and far more affordable options- paint, curtains, bed linens, and so forth.

You'll need to strip it before painting it if it has a shiny finish on it. Not hard, but a bit time-consuming. It's hard to give any ideas without knowing what the rest of the room looks like; if you want regular paint or stain, etc. It's doable with lots of time and effort. Could be a fun project if you have that kind of time and like doing that sort of thing.

replace the knobs with something you like better, use washable school glue to attach fabric or paper to the drawer facings. (when you are tired of the new look you can wash it back off with soap and hot water along with elbow grease) when i was in high school i did this with my bedroom set, it is also blond, and at the time it was bordering on antique... after washing it all off and putting the original hardware back on, it is classified as antique and no one can tell that it once had geometric print fabric glued to it. for prep i just washed it well.

If you choose to paint a couple of pieces, I suggest you paint the nightstands black. Also, consider changing the knobs of all the pieces (black really looks great against maple). My Mom totally changed the look of her room by ditching the matching mirror and purchasing a smaller, very attractive mirror. I couldn't believe how it transformed the whole room.

Google ‘annie sloan chalk paint’ - It is amazingly easy to use. No pre stripping/sanding is necessary. Plus, a little of the paint goes a LONG way. Good luck!
