So my husband is in the army and as people have been hearing on the news that a lot of places might be on a government shut down. the military may not be getting paid after today and what does that mean for us families who have two small children to feed and diaper. We don't have large sums of cash and this basically means my husband and I will have to cut back on our eating (which isn't much anyway) so that our son can have food. I have a 1 year old and a new born who is in the hospital since he's 5 weeks early. Anyone know how to deal with this? I live in South Korea so I have no family here to help. I should also mention that I had an emergency c-section April 1st so I can't stand for long periods of time so cooking is out of the question for me. My husband can't cook so I sometimes have to walk him through things.
I'm certainly not an expert on this subject, but I heard on NPR (National Public Radio) today that military personnel will continue to get paid through a government shutdown. There are different classifications of government workers - essential (exempt) and unessential (nonexempt). All exempt people will continue to get paid.
I'm not 100% positive, but I think that if there is a shutdown, the military still gets paid. If not, then they will get back pay.
If you have direct deposit with Service Credit Union, they are giving 30day 0% loans. If you have Facebook, add Stars and Stripes. They are giving constant updates along with info on where to turn in this emergency situation.
look up on the net about anything 'frugal' or 'simple living'. it tells how to make ur own detergent and softener for the clothes, how to can meat, veggies and even how to make bread.

Look into cloth diapering. It is sooo much cheaper than disposables. The initial purchase is steep, but the long run you'll save $2000-$3000 in the long run. It seems gross, I know. I never thought I would cloth diaper. I'm not about the body fluids, but cloth diapering is not bad. I actually deal with poop less than when I was using disposables! And less laundry! Go figure! You could go to the American Red Cross and apply for an emergency loan. Personally I don't believe the shutdown will last very long at all. Good luck!
Army Emergency Relief (AER) can give you a loan if you need it. Go into any Army Community Service (ACS) and ask. They'll help you. AER gives low interest loans to Service members and their families. They can even stretch your payment out over time so you don't have to pay too much back a month.
