Ok a friend and I are discussing this and both think differently but want to know the correct answer.

I've always heard 3 traffic tickets in 1 year and you lose your license, is this correct? Does it have to all be for the same offense like speeding or can it be for 3 different things and is this even true?

What can I do next?

It is different in each state. In NE it is based on a 12 point system. Different offenses receive different point deductions.

Seven years ago I got 3 speeding tickets in a one year period (Sept, Feb, and June). After that I received a letter stating that if I got another ticket within a 12 month period that my license would be suspended.

I haven't had a ticket since (knock on wood!).

If you live in Minneapolis (or maybe just in Hennepin county), you could call 311 and ask them - this information line is a great, free resource for all kinds of questions. This spring, I called and asked if the city will charge a fee if there are too many false 911 calls from one house (my 2 year old son accidentally called once and the police came to our house to check it out). It turns out there isn't a charge for any amount of false 911 calls (thankfully!).

I would like to add that in MN & WI, all it takes is one upaid, overdue ticket and your license is suspended until you pay up.

It depends on the state in which you live and the number of points given for any particular offense. For example, if you are going 65 in a 25 you lose your license from one offense.

Sadly I know this answer since we just had to research it for my husband. If you are in the state of WI it depends on the number of points associated with each offense. Once you hit 12 points your license is suspended. A low speeding ticket and small offenses are usually 3 points and higher speeding tickets are usually 4. You have to go 3 years with no incident for the points to starts coming off unless you take a class at MATC which will take 3 points off. I hope this helps you can also do more research on line just make sure you look at your exact state and county because it does differ. If you don't know how many points you have you can go on the DMV website and ask for a offical count to be sent to your home free of charge.

as far as I know 12 points within a two year period will get a license suspended. Moving violations I believe are two points......for example a speeding ticket.

It depends on the state that you live in, but generally it is three moving violations in a year.

you have so many points on your license. and with each ticket a certain amount of points is taken away. when you hit zero you loose your license.

As far as I know it varies. Your only allowed 12 points. Not all traffic offences are equal in points. It's not necessarily 3 traffic offences and you're out (like babseball 3 strike you're out) unless each ticket is worth 4 points each and you get them within a year.

My husband (an assistant county attorney) says that if you get 4 in 12 months or 5 in 24 months you can lose your license for 30 days. This includes traffic, failing to yield, basically any vehicle citation other than parking tickets. Hope this helps!

So it looks like you've gotten quite the choice of answers already, but here's one more. In IA you get three tickets, and if you get a 4th you get suspended.. But you can get a work permit and drive anyway. And then for a year afterwards you cant get any tickets or it gets suspended again.

But- if you get a ticket right around that 12 month mark you can cheat the system by not paying that last ticket till after the date because it doesnt go on your record till you pay it! But of course check with your own local DOT to find out for sure. :)
