My husband just had one removed about a month ago. He didn't have the laser, the doctor cut it out. The procedure took less than 10 minutes. They use a local anesthetic, which numbs the area for a bit. We made the mistake of taking our time getting his main meds filled, and once the local wore off he was in ALOT of pain. Once the pain meds kicked in, he was much better. Still hurt, but not as bad. He took alot of warm baths to help with the pain. He was fine after about a week. As for the humiliating exam, these doctors do this all day...to them you're just "another butt"! After all the pain my husband dealt with before and during the recovery period, he's so happy he had it removed, and doesn't have to worry about it coming back. Good luck!

I was lucky and did not have your problem. However, my mother-in-law had it I believe with every one of her 6 kids. My hubby also was about your age when he had to have the surgery. I can tell you that though the pain after the surgery was not fun, the relief after he healed was worth it (or so he said).

Having had 4 kids, the after pain may not be as bad as it is for the males who have not gone through child birth!

After my 4th son, I have the same problem. I went to a proctologist and the exam was embarassing, as you describe. The one I went to, however, said that only one of those needed to be removed - and then went on to say that the recovery after the surgery time would be the same as if I used an ointment to shrink it. I elected the ointment. I do think it's worth it to get a 2nd opinion. Those doctors are used to people being embarassed and there has to be some of them that are better with people.

A friend of mine had to have the surgery after her first child. I would suggest a second opinion if you aren't sure. Also, make sure you do your research on your surgeon. She had to have it done twice because the first surgeon didn't do the greatest job. She thought the recovery was better than the pain before the surgery.
