Hemorrhiods... TWO YEARS After Baby?!

After each of my two children were born vaginally (four years and two years ago) the doctor mentioned that I might have some hemorrhoids that developed from pushing. I never noticed anything and really never thought more about it- until today. They're here... in full force. I don't know what to do! I feel like an old man looking at hemorrhoid cream at the grocery store!

Has anyone delt with this after giving birth--- TWO YEARS after giving birth?! What should I do? What should I use? Should I call the doctor? I'm so grossed out! HELP! Oh, I guess I should tell you I'm just itchy and very uncomfortable. I don't have any bleeding or anything like that, just really uncomfortable.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the suggestions! I got some witch hazel and am going to try that, hopefully it will work! Glad to know I'm not alone on this one!

I've had mine since my daughter was born, 8.5 yrs ago.
They don't ever go away they just shrink and then become inflamed over and over again.
I use preparation H wipes and cream. It's just part of being a mom. MANY many women have them. Don't be embarrassed.

There are 2 kinds of hemorrhoids. Internal and External.

Internal are much more painful and harder to treat. They're more easily inflamed and harder to treat. External are not any more comfortable, they're just more easily treated with OTC products like Preparation H.

I developed them after my daughter's birth (kids are the same age as yours). They went away, but chemo a few weeks later really constipated me bringing the hemorrhoids back with a vengeance. I was honestly afraid to go to the bathroom because it was SO painful.

My doctor gave me 2 prescription creams that have lidocaine in them and were immensely helpful: Rectagel and Analpram (yes, the names are awful - I work in the pharmaceutical industry and am embarrassed about them).

Preparation H couldn't touch how much better these made me feel.
I also had to start taking stool softeners and laxatives to make the process easier and give the hemhorroids time to heal.

Hot baths are supposed to help. I didn't get any relief because I had both internal and external.

Hemorrhoid surgery is supposed to be one of the most painful - so, the only ways to treat are to soften your stools to relieve the strain and to use topical products to help with the inflammation.

HI K.,

These aren't necessarily from child birth. It can be pushing when you go to the bathroom as well. Fiber is necessary to avoid these and get rid of them as too. Be gentle with yourself. High grade tea tree oil mixed in another base oil (lanolin or olive) can be applied to heal (it will also help the itch) and you also need to be drinking a lot of water. Your digestive system needs adjustment.

Nutrition is important and digestive health is at the top of the list for overall health. If you'd like to talk, let me know. I'd be glad to help.

Regards,

M.

I had a similiar problem. Doctors can do verylittle unless you want them removed. that can cause loss of control issues. I passed. One of the best things I have found is Witch Hazel. I use some in a squirt bottle every time I have a bowel movement.
Good Luck

Take a soothing bath- get a ring pillow to sit on and yes, get the cream- it will help shrink them and take the itchiness away. I know it sucks- but you will feel much better! Do this for a few days and if you don't feel significant relief, call your doctor. Hope you feel better soon!

along with the bath suggestions, you can buy a bottle of witch hazel at most drug stores. This is the main ingredient in the pads and wipes marketed for hemorrhoids. You can use cotton balls to apply but the cotton pads work better--I think they might be in the make-up section of stores (a row of cotton pads to use for applying or removing makeup). They are round or square. Soak one or 2 with the witch hazel and apply. When it gets really bad, you could use a somewhat hot--not burning or scalding--compress to help shrink a bit first.

I had the same issue but a year after my son was born. I finally got fed up with dealing with them and the creams and such didn't do much so I called Queen City Medical Center in Sharonville ###-###-#### or you can check it out at www.hemorrhoidcenters.com). The doctor was great at explaining everything and giving me preventative measures (such as using flushable wipes rather than toilet paper, taking fiber, not pushing a BM and how the hemorrhoids work and their function). He did the laser treatment on my hemorrhoids (my insurance paid for 4 treatments but he said he likes to do 6) but the 1st visit was about an hour explaining everything and my options but then the following visits was just treatments and I was in and out in 10 minutes back to my regular routine with no pain or side effects. The laser did cause shrinkage in my hemorrhoids, and the fiber has helped immensely. The doctor's name is Joseph Reising. I would recommend him and this treatment to everyone that is having to deal with hemorrhoids.

They are still a bit gross for me to use...but they help so very very much are the hemorrhoid suppositories.

I had them after my first child but not my second...but they still pop up (or i should say out) from time to time.

I feel your pain. My trouble was, I had no idea if I was going crazy or what, because I didn't feel anything until my first was 11 months old. All of a sudden one day at my in-laws, I started itching. Now I am pregnant with #4 and have had itching and minor dabs of bleeding ever since (probably from irritating the skin when I itch with TP). I had a colonoscopy between #1 and #2 which showed "minor" internal hemors. So I can't feel them or "poke them in". So weird. After we're done having all our kids I may go see a specialist to find a more permanent solution. Thanks for bringing this up. I can't talk about it to anyone else except moms who know what I mean :)

I still have them after 12 years and 4 kids later. I manage them. I stay hydrated and eat fiber so they don't get irritated. I only have problems when I am sick or get off my eating routine. I know if they get bad I can get them removed. SO far I live with them.

I can imagine your concern. I would not give into feeding him on the run. Set meal times are important as are snack times. Even if he is a grazer I think putting him in his high chair, giving him food that he can feed himself for the most part and trying not to make a big deal of the whole eating thing will help work out the problem. Eating is one of those things that you can not force children to do no matter how hard you try. My pediatrition said that a hungry child will eat. In my opinion giving him breakfast, am snack, lunch, pm snack, dinner and evening snack on a schedule might help. The less attention he gets for his refusals the better. Put him in his high chair, snack or have something to drink with him, put him down when he is finished and go on with your day. Offer him pieces of what you are eating at meal times. Oneof my children hated baby food and we switched to table food that we smooshed up if he could not chew it. He carefully would watch from the booster chair to make sure it was the same food we were eating nd learned to point before he had language at what he wanted more of.

I feel your pain!!!!! Mine didn't wait until I delivered...shortly after I found out I was prego with my second they "reared" their ugly head (pun intended :o) for no apparent reason. I tried everything, OTC, prescription creams and suppositories, you name it I tried it. The thing that worked the best...Vicks VapoRub!!! I know, it sounds crazy, but the cooling effect releives the pain and itch like no other remedy and it really does help shrink them. Of course this for external hemorrhiods only. You REALLY need to give it a try!!!! I also agree, using the "wipes" with Witchhazel instead of TP helps to not irritate them anymore. And FYI...you don't need to go to the doctor and pay for an office visit or co-pay for an exam to push them back in...I know it sounds gross, but you can push them back in yourself. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!!

I did. I shoved out a 9 pound kid. Same thing. Just irritating & uncomfortable. When it bothers me I will use Preperation H cream. It does work. I find that mine will kinda flair up & then feel fine. Then flair up & feel fine. I dunno... LOL! Good luck. :)
