Have You Been to Ojo Caliente, NM?

In a few weeks, a good friend and I are going on a "girl's week-end" to Ojo Caliente in NM. This is my first "adults only" non-work trip since my oldest son was born over 8 years ago!

I am so excited! Have you ever been? If so, what services, hikes, etc. do you recommend? Was there something you wish you'd packed or done or seen? Something you wish you'd skipped?

THANK YOU! Whoo hoo!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We hiked up to where the Posi Pueblo site was. We walked out to the historic round barn. We soaked in the hot tubs (in the snow!). And we had two night and mornings of NO demands! Thank you all for your advice!

ETA: I should add - if you stay on-site, they will give you all the towels you want, but if you are staying somewhere else, it's something like $2/towel, so bring your own! My friend and I stayed at the cabins and we had robes to use (with pins marking us as guests), but I was glad to have the extra robe because my Ojo one was always wet and it was cold! At the cabins, there are showers and small kitchens. The shower was stocked with the Ojo wild crafted skin and hair care. I needn't have packed that!

We had SUCH a good time!

Oh, I love Ojo! I went with my girlfriends this fall and it was a fantastic weekend. The massages and skin treatments are great, if you're a fan of yoga - take one of their classes. Really relaxing. But if you're not a big yoga devotee, don't bother. We didn't hike... spent more time drinking wine in our hotel room and giggling. But it's pretty in any direction, so you can't go wrong asking the staff for whatever type of hike you want (easy, strenuous, etc.) and going for it. And make sure you wander around and discover all of the hot springs - don't just stick with the first one you find.

I wish I had packed cozy slippers; the floors weren't exactly cold, but we spent a lot of time hanging out and that would have been nice. Similarly, I was glad I packed a pair of fleece pants for hanging around the room. This is definitely not the type of place to pack your fancy clothes.

Bring snacks because there really isn't anywhere to get simple stuff in between meals. The food in the restaurant is really good, though, so you may not get hungry between meals.

Oh yes!! My honey and I LOVE it there! It's very low-key and relaxed (no noisy kids bumping around) and fairly isolated from everything.
If you're driving, stop for food/snacks in the last decent-sized town because there's just one restaurant on site. They have good food, but it's pricey and kinda "frou-frou" dishes. :) (From Denver, that would be Alamosa, Taos? It's only about a 30-min drive south to Espanola where they have walmart & groceries, but you're not going to want to hang out there). Also, the last time we were there, we ate at a little "mom&pop" New Mexican restaurant off the highway--they actually had pretty good food. Can you tell that food is always my #1 priority when I take a trip?!
Anyways, if you like massages, theirs are good (followed by a hot wrap)! I've never done their yoga, but it is offered. Bring a robe because in Feb/Mar it is still cold and walking from pool to pool, you'll get chilly! If you're staying a few days, bring an extra suit (just-in-case) and extra towels (old ones are better, since the sulfur smell can linger).
See this website for maps of the hiking trails (http://www.ojospa.com/pdf/ojo-trail-web.pdf). I've only done the red one (the shortest) because I'm not big into hiking. It was pretty from the top of the loop.
If you like going to hot springs, you'll really enjoy this place! It's so beautiful and relaxing and we Always enjoy ourselves when we go! All this hype has me itching to plan my next trip up there! :) Enjoy! (Feel free to PM me if you'd like any other info or details!)

It's been SO MANY years since I've been there! They had a fire (many years ago) and I think I've only been there once or twice since then.
Unless the area has really been built up around there - there wasn't anything nearby. Well, I think there was a stable down the road but that was all. The resort had a restaurant and a small gift shop. We usually stayed in the cabins, which were tiny but did have kitchens. (no showers though, you showered up at the bathhouse) For shopping, restaurants, etc we would drive over to Taos or even Santa Fe.
I'm SO jealous! Love Ojo! It really was an amazingly calm, peaceful place. Have a *great* time!

My husband and I went there many years ago and had a great time. The facility itself was rustic but comfortable. The spa (we did a wrap and a message) was wonderful. The hot springs are lovely for soaking in. And we had fun horseback riding. Do the riding before the spa - that way if you're saddle sore, you have the message to help work the kinks out.

Didn't even know there was such a place as "Hot Eye" in New Mexico... lol! There's a spa there that has gotten good ratings, so if you've got the money to spare, I'd definitely look into it! http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g47139-d115689-Re...

I have been a regular visitor to Ojo Calente for years. It's a nice retreat, and they have a nice hike on the ridgeline, beautiful for an early morning hike. ENJOY!
