Hardwood Floors - Old Greenwich,CT

Hey L.. just got hardwoods myself. my guy said ONLY use water and once in a while to deep clean use a tablespoon of vinegar to a gallon of water. He said anything else inclusing murphy's is not good. have you tried mixing a little poly with the stain to touch up scratches. ask your floor guy for how much of each to mix.

I don't use Murphy's anymore. There is a sealer on the floors that once penetrated can wind up leaving stains on the wood. To clean on a weekly basis I use a solution of water and a product from Melaleuca that works great. An ounce of their multipurpose cleaner Tough & Tender in a gallon of water ( someone suggested Melamagic. OK for everything but wood) the trick with wood floors is to use a microfiber mop. You emerge the microfiber pad in the clean solution mop the floor, rinse the soiled pad under the sink and then use the cleaning solution again. If you keep spreading the dirt, the floor looks worse at the end. Throw away your mops.

When I had my hardwood floors re-done several years ago, I was told not to EVER use anything except vinegar & water...but my floors always looked dull. Then I tried Murphy's Oil Soap...same dullness and they were "tacky" feeling.

Last year I discovered a fantastic product that I buy in my local Shop-Rite for some ridiculously low price (around $7.00). Also available in some hardware stores.

There are actually 2 separate products...one is a cleaner and one is a floor finish...both are called "Quick Shine" made by Holloway House. Easy to use and you won't believe how great it works!!!
The cleaner really cleans well, is rinse-free (yeah...one less step to do!!!), and leaves no buildup.
The floor finish makes your floors look shiny and brand new...and mine are the original floors from 1919!!!

I highly recommend these products...but you have to use both to get the best results...without the floor finish, my floors were clean but not shiny.

I use green products that are safe and clean very well. They even removed paint from a newly "polished" hardwood floor without removing the polish. The company I shop from is Melaleuca. Their products can be seen on this site-

MelaMagic, the product I LOVE and use is about $5.00 and it makes 32 GALLONS of floor cleaner! And it's GREEN !:)

When we moved into our house and had our walnut hardwood floors refinished, we were told to use only vinegar and water to clean the floors. The guy who did the work said most of the name brand cleaners on the market will slowly damage hardwood because of the harsh chemicals used to create the cleaner. He also mentioned that Murphy's Oil was probably the safest name brand to use if we wanted to brighten the look of our floors.

Actually, I was pretty surprised at how inexpensive it was to refinish our floors, if you are considering it in order to remove the scratches.

I LOVE the HOOVER Floormate! I tried everything and had read and heard from many others this was the best and I love it. It has scrubbers to clean, rinse, and steam to dry. I used it lots when my kids would get food all over the place and sometimes I would find dried up nastiness, it worked on it! Not sure about the scratches, sorry.

I have oak hardwood floors as well. I use to use Murphy's oil until I was educated about all the toxin in it. Now I use a non-toxic line of cleaning products. I heard toothpaste helps with scrathes with wood. If you want to know what I use let me know. I buy it from myself (I started a business once I feel in love with it) and I don't want to be flagged for soliciting without you asking.
