Was is the appropriate etiquette on giving your nanny a raise. We have someone who comes to our home daily (M-F)and watches our children. If you give a raise, how much?? How often, yearly?? How has the economy effected this?

I worked as a nanny for 10 yrs. The pay was always discussed in the contract. In general, after 90 days I was given a $.50 per hour raise, then on the "aniversary" of my hiring, was given a $1 per hour raise.

If you feel you've reach the maximum you can comfortable afford to pay your nanny on a weekly basis, you could give her quarterly bonuses (or even just random bonuses).

In a typical job settings, raises are usually one every 6m or one a year. How much of a raise depends on your arrangement. If you pay her a flat rate say $500 weekly, then you'd give her a lump sum adjustment to say $525 weekly. If you pay her hourly, say $10 an hour, then you would increase her hourly rate. To say $10.10, $10.50, or if she's Supernanny, $11.

How the economy has affected it depends on YOUR income. How much do you depend on her and how much can you afford to pay her.

It's really your call unless you have a contract that states otherwise. Typically I would give an annual cost of living raise (typically 2%). If she's doing a great job you may want to give her up to 8%.

I was giving my nanny a small increase about every 2 years. In addition, I would give her annual holiday bonus.

When I was a nanny...100 years ago...LOL...my contract was written up to say I got a Cost of Living (COLA) raise each year on my Nanny-versary date, and a merit based raise at their discretion as well. There was also a minimum % written in for any subsequent children (they had one more).

It happened that my Nanny-versary date was my birthday..easy all around to remember...and my family was very generous. I always got the COLA, a decent percent merit raise....and religiously they gave me a 2 week (before taxes amount) cash envelope as a birthday gift. The last 3 of my 8 years with them I did not get the COLA raise, but still got the other things. We agreed to this due to me bringing my daughter with me each day from the time she was 18 days old.

But as I said....this was a long time ago (a little over 20 years ago)....and it was in my contract.
