Food Poisoning???

Oh, sorry, trying not to be TMI here.

My dinner at the local Chinese buffet did not agree with me.
While I am slightly nauseous, I am not vomiting.
But, the, er, other end is upset. Cramping, gassy, many trips to the bathroom over night.

So I am eating GasX like candy, I did take 1/2 an Rx nausea pill about midnight, and I am currently drinking jasmine tea with honey.

I don't want to take anything like Pepto Bismal or Immodian (sp) as they don't agree with me.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks Moms

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone.
Everything has settled down but for mild cramping.
I had some crackers and lots more jasmine tea and water.
Just woke up from a 2 hour nap. I have to cook something to feed my teen. Or he will live on cookies all day. LOL
Since I am baking chicken breasts I may try some - or I may just have some Cream of Wheat.
I eat at this restaurant all the time, but your comments got me thinking - I ate different things off the buffet than usual - several kinds of fish - so maybe instead of food poisoning it was just a reaction too much fish.
Ugh, either way.
Thanks again for your advice.
You all ROCK.

My husband had to fly to India 3x, two weeks each time. He got severe food and/or water poisoning each time he went. After he came back the first time he lived in the bedroom and the bathroom and I would bring him glasses of water all day and night. He couldn't keep anything down and after 3-4 days of throwing up but not eating I finally got him to agree to go to a Dr. He gave him a pill or shot and within dayshe was his old self again.
I've never seen anyone throw up that much and diareah non stop too as much as he did. Sometimes it takes a few days for the bug to work itself out of the intestines.

Try cinnamon. Add real cinnamon to applesauce or make a piece of cinnamon toast. It will usually work in 15-20 minures.

You can also make rice in milk 2x as much milk as rice -- add cinnamon and sugar + raisens. Helps a lot with tummy issues. If it seems a little thick add more milk.

All I can say is that I sympathize with you. I have been sick since yesterday morning. Of course, my son's 3rd birthday party was yesterday at a park....in 95 degree heat....for 3 HOURS! I'm not sure how I made it through the party, but I came home and crashed afterwards and couldn't get out of bed. I'm finally starting to perk up this afternoon. I have no idea if it was food poisoning or a 24 hour flu bug, but I was miserable. I think sometimes these things just take time. The tea is a good idea. Not sure what else you can do besides wait it out. Hope you're feeling better soon!

The sooner you clear it out, the sooner you will feel better. You might try some ginger tea for the nausea. And something salty, like a few pretzels, should help your system to get back in balance.

First of all, true food poisoning onset is almost immediate. As soon as the body recognizes the bad food, it is in alert mode, to get rid of it. Thus, vomiting, cramping, sweats, etc. If some of the food does manage to get through, the system, diarrhea accompanies. The worst thing we could do is stop the body's natural process of purging the bad food. Taking something to stop vomiting, or diarrhea, actually helps to keep the bad food in our body longer. Better to let it escape. You can help things along by not fighting it. However, trying to stay hydrated is the best thing you can do.

Other reactions to food are a different matter. People react differently for a variety of reasons to different foods. Chinese food could have introduced a variety of different vegetables that we are just not used to. Some cause gas and bloating. Our guts are filled with bacteria designed to breakdown foods, and some people could be lacking enough to successfully do that.

I also learned several years ago, what happens to food that is not digested properly. After surgery, I didn't wait to resume to a normal diet, it was Thanksgiving, and I deserved to have dinner like everyone else, didn't I? Wrong. My digestive system wasn't yet up and running normally. So....that huge turkey dinner, sat in my stomach, fermenting, (yes, that is what happens). Fermentation causes gas, bloating, and pain. The longer it stays in the stomach...OMG, unbelievable! I was hospitalized, to get the system working again.

In case you're wondering, the surgery was abdominal. The muscles and nerves cut during the surgery, were not reconnecting and sending messages as quickly as they should. Also, they were still sleepy and sedated from the anesthesia. So instead of the nerves telling the abdominal functions to get going, they simply weren't. So, when doctors ask you if you passed gas, or had a movement, don't lie. They won't send you home until you have. It's very, very important. Isn't it amazing the things we MUST learn the hard way!

When you feel like eating, try some white rice mixed with cream of chicken soup. It's easily digested and the rice will absorb any of the lingering bacteria to help you pass it.

Hope you get well soon!

Might be an enterovirus. If so, you'll be sick as a dog for 24-36 hours. Drink lots and wash hands frequently. The major risk with enteroviruses is dehydration, so drink lots of water with a little sugar and a little salt. Gatorade, diluted juice, electrolytes, whatever. Just make sure it has a little sugar and a little salt. You'll recover.

Don't take Immodium. It's on the WHO list of "useless and dangerous medicines". Just let your body flush the virus.

Be forewarned that enteroviruses are incredibly contagious. Generally they merrily walk through any group or household, with about 24 hours between people going down sick. There's not much you can do to stop them. They pretty much sweep through a group until everyone's had it, then die out. It takes a week or two to die down, depending on the size of the group, unless it's a cruise ship or a summer camp, with new folks coming in every week or two.

Isolate as much as possible and expect to be caring for other members of your household in a day or two. If anyone's skin starts losing elasticity, get medical help. That's a sign of dangerous dehydration, and IV fluids are in order.

I just googled food poisening and read 6 different medical reports and it can come on anywhere from 2 to 48 hours depending on what is causing it. It doesnt have to be instant or just after you eat the offending food. Makes no difference tho really cause you feel really crappy no matter how or when it happens. I had food poisening once. 4 couples went to the local fair and had dinner at one of the food booths. We ate about 7 that evening and after a fun time we all went home and right about midnight my husband jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom sick,, I got up to go see if he was ok and before I could get to the bathroom, I was sick too. We did eventually talk to the other couples and 6 of the 8 of us had been sick that night. We had eaten the hamburgers from the booth, and the 2 who didnt get sick had eaten tacos. We think it was the mayonnaise that got too warm. Now, I was breast feeding our son who was 3 months old. 3 days later, he started throwing up and had terrible diapers too. It had never occured to me that he was getting the same rotton food through my milk. Not sure why I hadnt thought of that.
Now, sometimes when we go to a certain Chinese buffet I get a stomach ache, upset, and spend time in the bathroom that evening usually within an hour of eating. We go to a different Chinese buffet and I dont get sick. Everytime it happens! So we think it is something the one place does that is different from the other place and for some reason it doesnt agree with me. Its not food poisening, its just an intollerance to some food or oil that my body doesnt handle well. I also find this exact same problem at one Fish n Chips place, but not the other. Also Chinese tends to be a lot of veggies and your intestines might not be used to that much all at once. It is a large dose of fiber to take in if you arent used to it. I bet you feel better soon.

Gatorade or Powerade are a good way to keep hydrated and replace electrolytes when you have diarrhea and may help relieve the nausea. If you're vomiting, wait 30 minute before drinking anything so that your stomach can settle (unless you're to dry heaves, then having something in your tummy can help it be less miserable).
Then wait it out. If it isn't cleared up in a couple of days go ahead and call the dr just to rule out more issues.

I have had food poisoning twice. Once was because of whipped cream that was left out in the heat. I had severe cramps and was in the bathroom doing #2. I had to take immodium because I was in a different state and it was about 3 hours to get home. That was a big mistake. You need to let nature take it's course and get it out of your system. The second time was at Mystic Pizza in Mystic CT. I had clam chowder. I was pregnant at the time. Learning from my mistake the first time I just let it run it's course. The first time was so bad that I had to go to the Dr's. My aunt went through the same thing. She ate pork chops for dinner the night before. Both her and her boyfriend where sick. I was unable both times to eat or drink. When I did the pain was so bad. My dr told me that everyone at some point gets food poisoning, that they just don't know it. They think that the food just didn't agree with them. So my advice to you would be to let nature take its course and you will feel better in a couple of days. Good Luck to you and I know how you feel.

I had something similar over Christmas. We ate at a new Mexican restaurant a few days before Christmas. It was horrible and I tried everything. One thing I did end up staying away from was coffee. That was HUGE for me because I LOVE coffee. I just could not stomach it. It took several days for this to pass. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

By the way, I am glad to hear you and your son are doing OK. I looked at your profile pic of Thor. He was so cute! The tree idea sounds wonderful. When our sweet kitty passed, our vet made a donation in her name to the local zoo. The zoo sent me a really nice thank you letter and certificate.
