Fixing My Son's Circumcision...

Hey Everybody,
It is finally official after two different pediatric urologist visits, my 9 month old son's circumcision has to be redone. Apparently the the doctor who did the original did not take off enough skin. I am very nervous for my son to be having any kind of surgery, but I have come to the realization that it needs to be done. And no it's not just a cosmetic issue, our insurance approved it after some medical problems arised bc of the incomplete circumcision...one very scary high fever that resulted from bacteria/UTI. Have any other moms/dad experienced this surgery? I guess I am looking for some success stories and encouragement. Any advice/stories/suport is appreciated.
And please, I am not looking for a circumcising vs. non circumcising debate. Or any of the nasty privite messages I got last time about "mutilating" my son. I am just looking for similar experiences. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

The boy I babysit for had to have it redone. It is painful for the baby but Motrin is sufficient. It's not that big a deal. Just know that this is trauma for the body so maybe afterwards take him to a massage therapist or cranio-sacral person to work out how the body will hold onto trauma and come back later as different issues within the child. For anyone thinking of circumcision, please find a Mohel to do it. They are so highly trained for Jewish Bris and the way they cut, is much more pleasant to the eye. Never let them use a machine to do it, only a knife. Good luck but be aware the body ALWAYS remembers trauma, but I still believe in circumcision.

Yes, we went through the same exact thing. My twins were extremely premature, 27 weeks, and we had the same thing happen. Don't know if the doc didn't take enough off because they were so small or if he just screwed up, but...

The surgery is noooooo big deal. I think our anticipation of it was worse than anything else. First let me say take a deep breath, it will be just fine. Of course we don't want to see our babies have to go through something like this, but better to do it now rather than later. Essentially recovery is same as when you had it done in the first place. Keep it clean, keep it moist, etc, etc. Our guy is 10 now and you wouldn't even know he had anything done to it, no scar or anything.

Like I said this is worse on us, than on him...Goodluck

Best of luck to the little guy!
They'll numb him up - if not put him under - and he'll be fine. Just uncomfortable for a few days. My understanding is that it's a pretty common procedure. Don't worry mama, he'll be fine.

I've gotten the nasty PMs myself on this topic - and I've completely laid into anyone that has the audacity to attack me on it. My philosophy is that if you take the time to personally attack me, you'd better be prepared to take what you dish out. I hope you do the same.
Good luck!

MY son had this done when he was 4 months old. To be completely honest, he did fine and was uncomfotable for about 12 hours. Once the initial pain block wore off he screamed the rest of the day when the pain medication wore off. The next day he was fine as if nothing had happened. Be sure to have the pain scripts filled to avoid any unneeded paid on his part and less stress for you for feeling like you can't do anything when he is crying and uncomfortable.

Hope this helps and he will be back to himself in no time.

My son had to be put under to have a circumcision at 9 months. He was born overseas where they do not routinely perform them. He had no trouble at all. I was nervous about the anesthesia, of course, but there were no issues! Not much pain afterwards and no problems since.

Good luck and rest easy!

Hi A.,

I just wanted to say that your son is in my prayers. I know its a hard decision to come to as a mom to put your child under anesthesia, but you know in your heart you are doing the right thing for him Best wishes and I hope everything turns out great! Once this is behind you, you will feel alot better. Take care, Molly

My brother had to have his circumcision when he was 5 years old due to continuous infection and urinary retention. He remembers it but says it wasn't too awful. He said he felt soo much better afterward cause he could pee normally and didn't always feel like his bladder was full. Just be sure to follow the after-care instructions and give him a little extra love and attention in the days after the surgery and everything will be OK.

Also, if they give him something to take for pain, don't be afraid to use it. If he seems a little more irritable or fussy than normal, it may very well be surgical discomfort. If you are sure he is not fussing because of the usual stuff like feeding, dirty diaper, etc., give him the medicine and see what happens.

Good luck!

I have twin boys and they both had the surgery to 'fix' their circumcisions. I know a few other people in my twins group who had to do the same. Not sure why it seems they don't take enough off nowadays. They both did well and it was an easy surgery. The hardest part was handing them over and watching them take them back. Good luck and hang in there!

My nephew had the surgery after some UTI issues. He was a little older at the time (4 or 5 maybe) and he said it didn't hurt much and the recovery didn't take long. I'm sure your little guy will be fine. Good luck!

Don't worry, I am not agreeing with "mutilating" opinions. Honestly, my son is circumcised for religious reasons. Anyway, my son is 2.5 and he has to get it again because the doctor didn't take enough skin off when he was younger. I am not sure when my husband will let him go again. It is not fun. I just have to pray that God covers my son for this final time and it will be right. I hope everything goes ok for your son.

I thought I was going to have to have the same thing done to my son. But they don't take as much skin off as they used to. They call it scalping where they take all the skin off (probably how older men look now days). But now they only take off half the amount of skin because when they are older and get erections, the pulling of the skin can cause pain if there isn't any extra skin to fill in. Sorry of TMI but this is how a ped urologist explained it to me. He asked me to wait till my son was 4ys old and see how it looked then because while he was a baby he didn't even look like he had been cut!!! Well now he is getting ready to turn 5 and I'm happy to say he looks pretty much normal down there and has had to have it redone. He grew into it so to speak. The urologist also told me that I had to care for it as if he wasn't circumsized by pulling the skin back and keeping it clean because he did have one small adhesion and it bleed a bit when he pulled it back.

I'm not saying you should or shouldn't have your son redone. I just wanted to give you my experience in maybe that your son got cut the same way mine did. Good luck in what ever choice you make!

my gf's son had to have it redone, but it wasn't until he was about two years old. It was very simple. Pretty much just like the first time, except this time it was done right. I'm pretty sure this is very common. Her son had no pain that she can remember. She just did the same thing she had done when he was a baby. A few days of vaseline around it after the recirc. Best of luck to you and your little guy. Have you thought about having a Moelle redo it? Not sure if they would but they are great at it.

Oh this makes me so happy that my son grew into his extra skin. His doctors said no worries so I didn't. He is 23 now, not that he would go up to me going jeez mom, couldn't you get a better cutter, still....

So far as the private messages, what is wrong with people. Regardless of it being unnecessary or not, it is the norm where I live. It is hard enough growing up without explaining your turtleneck. I am very sorry people had to be like that. :(

I work for anesthesiologists and from what I hear from our coders it happens a lot more than people realize. Some of them have been here for years and they haven't seen any horror stories on the charts. :) Not sure if that will help.

Lots and lots of probiotics for his immune system. Be w/ him, and ask that the surgery be as silent as possible.
