Facial Tremor

My sweet boy is 5 mos. A couple of days ago I was changing his diaper and noticed he was having what I guess would be a facial tremor. It looked like his bottom jaw muscle was having a spasm. It was only for a couple seconds. It happened about 3 times in about a minute and then stopped. I noticed it happening one time the next day, but nothing before and nothing sense.
I'm wondering if this is just a simple muscle spasm or something worse? My first time mom brain is thinking only the worst.
HAs anyone's seen something like this before?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I called the doctor and she said it was normal to have muscle spasms as the nervous system is still developing. We will continue to watch him closely. Thanks for all the responses- it helped to calm me down!

You an look it up on webmd.com if it keeps troubling you or if you can't get through that medical jargon and still are nervous, check with your doctor to rule out any other possibly damaging conditions. Ignoring something out of the ordinary could be cause for concern, it could be juvenile epilepsy or just a reflex. Watch to see if it happens at any other time, too. If it only happens when your changing him then its probably just a normal reflex, but if you notice it throughout the day have him check out.....You know as the old saying goes, "It is better to be safe then sorry."

My son has had the same issue since he was just a couple of months old, and he is now 2. Every time we have to wake him up he seems to have similar tremors, but they will go away after a couple of minutes. Our son is entirely healthy and happy, so unless you notice any other unusual behavior, I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi C.

I would make an appointment and take your son to the doctor. It could be more than tremors. I would rather be safe than sorry.
Please let us know the results.

When my now four month old did the same thing, and I was told at the time that it is because their muscles and nervous system are still developing, kind of like when their legs move with those jerky movements they do in the first month. So it might just be that and I would imagine the twitchiness should be ending soon, based on things I've read. Happy Mother's Day!

Does he drink formula or does he yet eat solid foods?
Sometimes food additives, preservatives, or flavor enhancers such as MSG or its dirivatives can cause this.
Check out Dr. Mercola's website www.mercola.com for a list of names that are hidden (but are actually MSG).
Or it could be a simple food allergy.

Hope this helps.

Did he has a blank stare while he had the jaw tremor, because if he did, then it could have been a petit mal, which is a small seizure. I would take him to the doctor just to get it checked out. There really is no treatment for them, and they are not fatal, but when he gets a little older, you might notice that he will stop anything that he's doing for a few seconds, and that will be when the petit mal happens. Most parents don't even realize what's happen and think that their child is ignoring them or just spaced out.

It's probably nothing, but you should definitely get it checked out by your doctor just to rule out anything serious.

I was reading some of the literature that the Pedi sent home with me from the hospital when I had my second boy, and that was mentioned. The chin trembles very noticeably. They said it is a totally normal reflex and usually baby's lose it after about 6-12 months. Both my boys did and do it, especially if I was picking them up or changing their diapers. Don't remember what they said caused it, but I think it said something about it being their immature nervous system. Hope this helps.
