Experiences with IUD

Hi Moms-
I have been researching birth control products and am looking at getting an IUD. I had been taking pills pretty religiously but don't like being forced to have a period every three weeks and feel like I would like a more permanant form of birth control. I have no intentions of having more children nor does my boyfriend want anymore.

I'm concerned about the side effects and gaining weight, and wondered if anyone who had personal experience with them could tell me what its been like for you and if you are happy with the IUD. I am trying to decide in addition if I should use the hormonal one or the copper one. Does it feel like somethin foreign is sitting in your body? Did you gain weight (a little or a lot) or have serious side effects? Has anyone had their uterus perforated upon placement? Have you gotten pregnant while using one? Infections? What were/are your periods like now?

I will see my doctor Friday and wanted some information beforehand so I can talk to her more about my options.

Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses! I talked to my doctor and she said either IUD's would be good options, but that since my boyfriend is getting a vasectomy sometime this year (hopefully by summer) it was really just a waste of money to get an IUD placed, especially since my insurance won't pay for any of it. Thanks again!

Hello, I wanted to share with you my experience with mirana iud. I absolutly love it. having it put in wasn't any worse than a yearly pap smear. I can not tell it's there and my husband doesn't feel it either. I didn't gain any weight, my hormones and mood swings leveled out and if i have a period it's very light and lasts one to two days. Plus it's good for 5 years or you can decide to have it removed if you want another child. good luck with whatever you decide

I know I'm late, but I'm just now catching up with my emails.
I'm a 59-year-old woman. Back in my fertile days, I had a friend who got pregnant twice on an IUD, and lost both babies.
On a religious note, God didn't intend for us to insert foreign objects into our bodies. He created us perfect, and our fertility is one of His great gifts. That's what marriage is for. If you want me to expound on this, let me know.

I had the copper IUD in place for several years. There was discomfort having it placed, more discomfort having it removed. I was shocked. My husband never felt the strings. I would say very rarely did I feel it in place. But I also have a 'hot spot' on my uterus from my pregnancies, and it might have been that I was feeling. Never any probs with infections or perforations. My periods were pretty much the same as before I had it placed, the same as now that it's removed.
Good luck on your decision.

If you are sure you are finished, I had a procedure done called essure and am SO glad that I did. It is permanent, though!

I had paragard and loved it. No hormones and no side effects from hormones. Make sure your doctor has placed IUD and the chances of uterine puncture is low for any IUD. Mirana has hormones and can only stay in for 5 years. Paragard is good for 10 years. I had slightly longer periods but that was it. No cramping or anything. IF we were going to have anymore kids then we would get it back in but we are done so hubby is getting the snip. :) But it was my favorite kind of birth control. Mostly because it was the only time we didn't get pregnant on accident. :)

Hi S.! I got the Mirena IUD and LOVE it. I had absolutely no weight gain (that was one on my concerns as well) and my periods are almost non-existent. No other side effects, but I did have cramping right after they inserted it and slight spotting for a few months. No, you cannot feel it inside of you. I have had it for over a year and would highly recommend it!

FYI, the hormone that is released is localized, meaning it stays within the uterus. This way, very little gets into the bloodstream and thus reduces your chances of suffering from hormonal side effects.

Good luck!

Hey S... just wanted to say you may want to google side effects for the Mirena.. I dont have it but a friend of mine does.. and she absolutely loved it.. when it was in for under a year. as soon as that year mark hit.. her hips feel like they're on fire, losing hair, cramps, swollen feet, weight gain.. etc.. She googled it and found a bunch of woman that have the same side effects but only after the 1st year it's in.. so you may want to research it more.. she's actually making an appt to get it out b/c it's that bad. Now i have another friend with the copper IUD, which is no hormone. I guess that one is great with no probs. Just an fyi that you may want to look into people that have had it longer than a year.. Good Luck :)

I have the Mirena, and I'm doing great with that. I had the Paragard, but had to have it removed because I had excessive bleeding with my periods with it. The Mirena works better for me. So, you just have to choose if you want to go with the hormonal vs. non-hormonal option. I guess you don't really know how your body is going to respond to either until you try one. I had the Paragard removed and the Mirena implanted the same day. So, I didn't have any time that needed another form of birth control between the switch. Good luck!

I have the Mirena implant and love it. Like the other ladies said, there was cramping when it was put in, but it goes away. I've had it for almost 2 years now and my cycle comes maybe every other month for a day or 2. Light enough you can just wear liners. Immediately after getting the implant though, I bled for several weeks- not sure if that's normal, but it definitely diminishes as time passes. I don't feel it, and my husband certainly doesn't feel it. We're talking about trying for our 2nd in the summer, but I will for sure be getting the Mirena again!!

I have the Mirena and I love it! I am terrible about taking the pill and was NOT ready to have another baby. I don't know if we're done, but I like the fact that I can have the Mirena removed if we want to try again, but if we don't, then I don't have to worry about it. I was really freaked out about how it would feel. I don't notice it at all. I haven't had any side effects either. I did have some pain when they inserted it and lots of cramping after, but I took some ibuprofen and it went away. It felt like regular menstrual cramps. The only side effect that I've had (and I wouldn't even call it a side effect really) is that my husband can feel the strings during intercourse. I'm going back to the doctor to have them trimmed up. I haven't had a period because I'm breastfeeding, but I was told that eventually you won't have one at all.

Also, my insurance covered 90% of the cost of my Mirena and they won't cover much of the birth control pill. So, that was a deciding factor for me :) LOL!
