I love my Nikon D40. A little old-school, but it's a great camera for the money and does everything I need it to do and more. The site by Ken Rockwell was really helpful for me to get started (& validated my camera choice!) ;)

Canon rebel or Nikon D80 or D90 are both good starter cameras, if that is really what you need. Do you need to change lenses? Are you going to operate the camera in automatic? If you will just throw it in auto or program, there are a lot of nice pocket cameras out there that aren't quite as heavy and bulky.

I have had a canon rebel eos camera for 20 years (2 different ones). about 4 years ago I got my second one and got the digital. absolutely love it! I would recommend getting a decent printer when you get the camera though. no one sees them if you don't print them. unless you just put them online.

I just bought the Sony NEX-3 digital camera. It's not a SLR but does everything that an SLR camera will do. I absolutely love it! I have a 35mm manual SLR (yes I still use film lol) =) and I wanted a digital SLR but after spending 2.5 hours in Best Buy and reading reviews online I knew this was the camera for me. It's smaller than an DSLR, the body is smaller but it has interchangeable lenses and every feature that a DSLR has. I love it!!!!!!!

We have a Sony Alpha 350 and love it!! It is very user friendly (it's our first DSLR) and takes great action shots!! My daughter plays soccer so I got it to take pics during her games. I'm sure they've updated the models since we got ours a few years back though. But we did just recently buy a Sony Cybershot Exmor-dsc-hx5 to replace or super old cybershot point and shot and this little thing is great too!! It has a multi pic button and it will take up to 10 pics at a time and they look pretty good for moving shots too. We took it to disney for a test run and are pretty pleased with it so far for only being a point and shoot. It is only a 10.2 mg pixels but has a high rate for video. They do offer a 14mg with a lower video but it doesn't have the multi photo option which I wanted.

Good luck and happy shopping!

I have a Canon EOS Rebel Xs, love it. Just got a new lens for it around Christmas time. It can be hard to carry around and chase my toddler since it was so nice to put my Powershot in my back pocket when I wasn't taking pictures, but I love the camera.

A friend of mine who is a photographer recommended a Canon S90 (it's not a DSLR) but it's got all the fun stuff of a DSLR minus the lenses and the big size. She says it's really fun!

We just got a Nikon d3100 for Christmas and LOVE it! Auto/Manual, image stabilization, 1080p hd video, very user friendly and the image quality is excellent. We also have the 55-300 zoom lens which is fantastic. This is our first dslr so other than written reviews I don't have much else to compare it with. We've been very happy with it. You might want to check out reviews here http://www.cameralabs.com/ or even on Amazon. Good luck!
