Dryness Around Toddlers Mouth and Face

Hi moms, has anyone had the experience of their toddler's face getting dry and flaky? It started just on his cheeks and now it's really dry and flaky under and around his mouth. It is mid-winter here and we all have issues with dry skin, but is there anything that can help get rid of it? I've been putting a little bit of his lotion on and some of my own hypoallergenic lotion. I'm guessing it is just going to take time, but it is uncomfortable for him mainly when I have to wipe his mouth after eating, otherwise I think it doesn't really bother him.

What can I do next?

We use Malaleuca's Renew lotion and the stuff works wonders. My son has eczema - and pretty bad, at that - and it works great on his skin.

I use Aquafor on my son's face and it usually takes care of the dryness in one day. In fact, I've used it for all 3 of my boys. I think of it as a miracle lotion.

Try lanolin. It will protect & it is hard to wipe off so it will stay put while eating, wiping etc.

Lots of people don't think of using straight olive oil (or any other oil such as cocunut, grapeseed, etc.) right on the skin. It's a food, so it's nourishing and never damaging. After all, our skin is our largest organ (area wise at least) and if you wouldn't squirt lotion into your mouth, you probably shouldn't use it on your skin. I use olive oil on my hands when they're dry and it works great. I use coconut oil on my face after I shower and I've never broken out from it. I hope this helps.

Aquaphor! That stuff rocks. Put it on during the day, definitely, but the most helpful thing is to sneak into his room when he's asleep and put it on. It will be much better by morning.

I put Aquaphor on my by daughters body, but I use lanolin I have left over from breastfeeding immediately around her mouth. Just in case she gets it in her mouth, I figure that's safer than a petrolium based product going in her mouth.

Hi J.,
I have been using a great lotion this last year and I have never had such luck in all my life. I have a history of dermatitis. I use this lotion every time I see a trace of it and it works wonders. I use it on my 10 month old granddaughter around her mouth and chin because she developes a rash from all her drooling and you can see a difference within hours. This is a lotion put out by a company that I have been a preferred customer with for a year now.If you would like to hear more you can contact me at ____@____.com

J.,

I know everyone has pretty much been saying this, but we recently asked our doctor because we were trying lotion and vaseline and while it gave a little relief, it was not enough. He said that a lotion only gives temporary relief, and that you have to use a cream...didn't seem to matter what kind. We just put it on right before bed so that it has all night to sit on there, I just figure if you do it during the day you are going to have to continually re-apply since there is so much more going on then. Hope this helps!

My kids really freak out about the sting of anything in lotions--alcohol and scent--so every night, I put vaseline on their faces and it really helps. I've thought I should probably put it on before they go out, since it's not a moisturizer but a barrier, but I haven't remembered that so far. They are both very willing to slather their faces!

We use Aquafor also for any dryness. Our son has Keratosis Pilarus aka KP (those bumps people get on the back of their arms), and it works better than Eucerin for that, too.

Putting vaseline on my toddler before naptime and bedtime works for us! I keep a separate jar labeled "face only" just for that.

Hi J.,
My son has the same problem. Aquaphor works as long as you keep using it. A cool mist humidifier works the best for us. I turn it on low whenever my son is in bed. As long as I do that, I don't have to use any creams or lotions.

My son also had the same thing (and still does on occasion). I put Aquaphor on his face before bed and he always wakes up back to normal. Aquaphor is amazing!

Try putting some of your hypoallergenic lotion on his face after he falls asleep, that way it has all night to soak in.

It sounds like eczema. My son had it as well and I had tried all kinds of lotions and the doctor even gave me a prescription for an eczema cream which didn't even work that well and it came back as soon as I even missed one day. The only cream that I found that actually made it better and healed it so it didn't keep coming back was called "Olive Butter body Balm" made by beauticontrol. You can find it here: www.beautipage.com/paulagerman if you go to moisturizers. It's an all natural product and works great for dry skin and sensitive skin on the whole body. I was so worried my son's wouldn't go away in time for my brothers wedding where he was a ring bearer for the pics, but it did and the photos turned out great! Good luck!

Hi J.,

I don't know if you've heard of 'baby' products by Bordeaux? I first learned of their 'Butt Paste' product - that's really what it's called!! :) But - it is INCREDIBLE - my guy had a pretty bad case of diaper rash early on because of a pretty heavy antibiotic he had been on - and the dr even had prescribed an ointment thinking it was possibly due to yeast induced because of the antibiotic - Well, the 'Butt Paste' is what made the difference (when I got passed its name!) - Anyway - they also have some lip/face ointment/cream - specifically for those 'chapped' areas around their mouths/on their cheeks - and, it works great too! I've even used it myself on my lips during the really cold weather - and it's awesome!! You can find it pretty much anywhere I think - Target - Walgreen's, etc. Hope this helps!!! :)

Vaseline - cheapest thing on the market and does the job without a lot of reapplying. You can use it safely just about anywhere on the body. My granddaughter would scream with other popular expen$ive choices. (Alcohol content can burn on cracked skin)

I've never tried Aquaphor but the real thick Eucerin lotion works great as well. I'll put it on my daughter as soon as she starts looking red and it looks better within an hour.

Aquaphor - I've used it with both my kids. Winter in MN can be so rough on their skin, but this stuff works great. Use it anytime you wash his face and just before bed/naptime.

My son has the same issue and we were concerned because he has very sensitive skin in general. But we were at the doctor for something else and I asked about the dry skin on his chin and around his mouth and the doctor told me it's weather related and that she's seen it alot this year. She recommended Eucerin and to apply it twice daily. I have been doing this for the last week and my son's skin does seem less dry. Hope this helps!
