Dizzy Spells - Grand Junction,CO

OK, I exercise daily, eat healthy, get plenty of sleep. I'm 35 years old. That being said, I am growing concerned about the number of dizzy spells I'm having in a day. EVERY time I stand up, I get that head rush, sometimes I feel a little tingling in my arms and hands, that kind of darkening in my peripheral vision.

It doesn't matter how long or short I've been sitting. Even if I bend to get something out of a lower cabinet or pick up a toy, I stand up and get a head rush!

Is it something I'm missing in my diet, maybe? I do eat healthy foods, but sometimes I'm busy and maybe don't eat enough for how much I work out. It's getting old, though. I hate that sudden feeling of fatigue and weakness. It's getting to the point where it's a little scary. And advice? Thoughts?

What can I do next?

K, not to freak you out, but a girl on my DD's soccer team was having the same symptoms. The ended up going to a dr. that informed them she was SEVERELY dehydrated. So dehydrated that her body was producing LESS blood to compensate for the lack of water. So be careful and DRINK DRINK DRINK!

I don't know; I seem to be getting dizzy more often than I used to, though. I fainted the other day when I was feeling sick. A friend of mine said after she had fainted she found out she was anemic (needed more iron).

Sounds most likely like low blood pressure. When I get that way, increasing my salt intake helps. I only need about one teaspoon a day to help with it. Hadn't thought about compressions stockings, but those are worth a shot, too. I used medium strength during my pregnancy that I had twins cutting off my blood supply, and they worked well for that. GL!

I have dealt with these symptoms on and off over the years. They could never give me a difinitive answer but here's what I've found out:

Upon standing up when it gets dark around you - that's low blood pressue that has to do with your heart not pumping blood fast enough from your legs. I had that frequently as a young person when I was very physically fit and thin. Now it's rare but my young thin, fit daughter now deals with with. The only solution - anticipate it and stand up slowly.

The other dizzy stuff - I've noticed that this occurs more often at certain time of the month so I think it's affected by hormones. It also seems connected to sinus / inner ear issues.

It's also connected to the amount of sleep I'm getting. I'm getting to the peri-menopausal time of my life and there are some nights that I don't sleep well. During those days I tend to have more dizzy spells.

Keep properly hydrated - drink LOTS of water. That helps too.

There are a lot of nutritionist who say although we eat all these "good" foods we are still suffering from malnutrition as a result of not having proper enzymes needed to digest the foods. This could all be true but since the work-up is not covered by my helath plan and I didn't have hundreds of dollars to pay for it I never pursued it.

Finally my MD told me a couple of years ago that I have a very slight electrical issue with my heart. My mother got a pacemaker at about age 63 - which is used to "fix" electrical problems with the heart. My doc said my electrical issue may progress or may not but it was benign at the time. It's called a AV node block. My sister and my neice also have a similar issue. I'm not sure if that could be a part of it but I do intend to get it all looked at one day when I have a few minutes!

I would be curious to hear any follow up if you do get an answer from a doctor.

Then I think it is to the point that you need to call your Dr and have them investigate. I get the feeling you may even be downplaying it.

Dizziness from standing up is most commonly related to low blood pressure or lack of protein for the day. Drink more fluids, eat protein and/or complex carbs at breakfast, stand up slowly after a couple of deep breaths, and get some compression stockings. They are thicker and stronger elastic than regular stockings. They come in knee-hi and thigh-high. They compress the legs and give you better blood flow to the upper body. You can get them anywhere that sells medical supplies---drug store or pharmacy section of the grocery store. Measure your calf circumference and the distance from heel to knee or top of thigh, depending on which you buy. If none of these things make it better, it's time for a Dr.

Dizzy isn't good. Presume you don't have a sinus infection going on. You could have Vertigo - an inner ear problem. See this link on the causes of dizziness and treatment: http://www.emedicinehealth.com/dizziness/article_em.htm.

If it were me, I'd also get an eye exam and ask about the darkening. Catching anything early in your vision is essential. They may or may not be tied together.

M.,
You REALLY need to get yourself to the doctor!! There are a number of things that could be wrong. The last thing you want is... is to not get it checked out and then have something really go wrong. So waste no more time a call your doc and make an appointment tomarrow!! It doesn't matter how healthy you eat or are you may have something internally wrong. High or low B/P, Diabeties, a heart murmur, or vitigo an inner ear problem, ect.

I hope you seek medical help soon. Be safe and you will be fine.
God Bless You

I tend to feel that way when I don't drink enough water. Adding some extra calories may not be a bad thing too. If you are still getting dizzy after adding water, you may want to be checked for low blood pressure, or anemia.

When's the last time you had your blood pressure checked? Mine naturally runs low (to the point where sometimes the person taking it will look at me and say "Can that be righ?" and I nod and say "That's normal".) and I tend to get dizzy when I stand up from sitting, bending over, etc, just like you described. Could also be a symptom of high blood pressure, ironically.

I would see the doc. Those machines in the store just aren't all that accurate. And, as all the replies suggest, it could be any number of things causing it.

This can be a symptom of Addison's disease (low adrenals), although I think you would also be generally weak and tired. Anyway, you should get a doctor's check-up just to be sure.

It sounds like orthostatic hypotension to me. Its where your blood pressure goes down and pulse goes up causing you to get light headed and faint feeling when you go from sitting to standing or even just bending over. Make sure you drink a lot and give yourself some time getting up rather then getting up sudden and it should help. You could even test if it you have some to take your blood pressure. Have someone take it while you are laying down and then right away when you stand up - same with your pulse.

Check with you doctor. However, I wonder if you have low blood pressure? I know that my blood pressure sometimes goes down to 96/50. . . . too low! I will get dizzy spells just for a moment. Check it out and see if this is what is going on with you.
