My daughter who is nine has been complaining about her armpits getting sweaty and smell. Is she to you to give deodrant?
Thanks ladies!! I am going to go ahead and get her some, I think I will take her and let her pick it out (with help). I want her to grow up a heathy young lady with great self esteem I just hate feeling she has to grow up to soon. I guess I just need to learn when to start letting go!
There are several deodarents at the store which are for "teen" girls. I would also talk to her pediatrician for recommendation and guidance about her age and use of deodarent. Definitely don't get her antipersparant.
You might try getting her a thing of powder that has a puff and try that before going the deoderant route. Seems to me I didnt start wearing it till I was about 12 (jr high) but we are all different. It's a pain to have to start the adult world stuff at only 9.... don't be surprised if Aunt Mary visits pretty soon to... might be a good time to explain all that to her... the hormones seem to be kicking in a lot earlier these days for kids.
Arm & Hammer (as in baking soda) has a great "natural" deodorant. You might give that a try.
Also, you might consider that she's not washing under her arms well enough if she's bathing on her own. We had to institute "sniff checks" with my boys at around age 9 to combat this. My now 16 year old once had to shower four times one evening before he passed.

Yep, both mine started needing deodorant around 9-ish. There are teen deodorants and you can check with your pediatrician for recommendations.
You can't stop the normal things that are to occur.
If she feels like she needs deoderant...GET IT....it effects her self esteem. Same wth shaving, etc. Don't make decisions based on a "norm" age..... that doesn't happen much anymore. Make decisions on what is happening in the real wold for YOU and your child.
That is the age my son began wearing deodorant.
Hi C., my daughter was about 9 too. Just went to the local market and picked up a few different choices. Currently (at 13) she says she likes Degree the best. I know some women have concerns about anti-perspirants/chemicals, etc., but we have never had any problems with any regular nation brand. Isn't weird that they start to stink at such a young age?! tehehe, good luck!
My first daughter needed it at the age of seven and my second needs it now at the age of six! I get them Arm & Hammer Essentials. It is a natural deodorant that has plant extracts and no aluminum, which some people believe contributes to Alzheimer's and other health issues.
Yes but be careful what kind you get because you don't want any of the ones that can be harmful or toxic in anyway. I am not sure of any at the local stores but do know of an online store where everything is safe (no worries). Let me know if you want more info.
our 7 year old has the same problem. I kept smelling something and thought it couldn't be him but sure enough it was. I asked our endocrinologist if that was normal and she said yes. She said we can start using deoderant if we want to but it's normal development.
My best friend just had to buy her 7 year old daughter deodorant this summer! She bought the Toms of Maine brand though, because it's all natural & free of aluminum. Like Carla E. mentioned, aluminum has been linked to alzheimer's and cancer...and regular deodorant is mostly aluminum! Scary thought, makes me wonder while i still use it! In all honesty, i have tried the 'all natural' products on myself, and found them to be not as effective. But, i think as older adults with stronger hormones, we need more protection. For a young girl starting out, the all natural products are great.
One of my twin daughters started wearing deo at 8, one at 9. (The second really would have been okay waiting one more year, but the first really needed to start at that time.) We didn't make a big deal of it, but we use "Secret," not a specific youth brand. But every child is different! Forming good hygeine habits is important, so it's good that your daughter recognized this need before somebody else did. (I used to teach 6th grade... young girls have a LOT to face in those growing years!)
My daughters are in sixth grade now, and I'm bracing myself for bigger physical changes on the horizon... we have our first bras, and I keep other supplies in the closet so they're here when the need arises.
No, she is not too young. My daughter started using deodorant even younger. I would suggest that you find all natural stuff that doesn't contain aluminum silicates. That is the ingredient that has the job of anti-perspirant and may play a part in causing cancer. I held off as long as possible before allowing anything with that in it, but now that she is almost 13, the others didn't seem like they were doing the job that needed to be done.
