Cost of Tile and Installation?

My husband is a great DIY guy but NO NO NO to tile.

Years ago, he spent a weeks vacation to install tile (2 days) look at it (1 day) the rip it all out (4 days)

It is worth hiring a pro (especially for us) because we are very nit picky on straight lines, etc.

We recently had about 100 SQ of carpet removed in a hallway and we replaced it with Travertine tile. My husband hand picked each tile from Floor Decor. We supplied 100% of materials and we paid about $500 cash to have it installed. I will say it is perfect and we love it.

He is in the process of collecting more Travertine (will need 500 pieces 16x16) for the family room and the same guy who installed the hallway tile will do the family room. He will also redo the fireplace area and we are looking at $2000 for that job. CASH

We had a quote for the hallway, fireplace and family room with the same travertine.... the company doing the install would supply everything and the quote was over $5000.

That seems like a good estimate. A lot will depend on the type of tile you select, but that sounds doable if you go with ceramic or porcelain tile.

We did porcelain tile in our master bathroom (which had been carpet ... WTH?!) and it was around 1k.

General rule of thumb: double the cost of the tile.

Yes, it does tend to be the same cost as the tile so you double it.

You may want to consider doing it yourself. It is very labor intensive but fairly easy talent wise.

My hubby taught himself how to lay tile when we wanted to tile the whole basement. Usually installation is 2-4x the cost of the tile. If your hubby is at all handy, I highly recommend seeing if he is up to learning how to do it.

We were able to tile about 900 sf for the cost of tile alone, and we went with expensive stuff. We saved about 10k. He also recently did our upstairs bathroom. Total tile cost: less than $200. My hubby makes good money, and this is the one thing he does by himself because tile installation is a ripe off. It also doesn't include any prep work. Hubby believes in putting in a subfloor so that when the house shifts, you don't get cracked tiles.

Home Depot offers classes on how to do it yourself. You will save THOUSANDS...you can rent the tools needed from Home Depot instead of buying them...and do it yourself.

For 500 Square Feet - it might take a weekend to do - pulling up the old carpeting, prepping the floor/foundation, laying the plumb lines and then laying the tile.

it's a lot easier than you know.

Love, love, love the look of porcelain "wood" tiles. I don't blame you for not wanting to try that yourselves - it has to look right.

I don't blame you for not wanting to lay the tile yourself! We are avid DIY'ers when it comes to many projects, but passed the tile job onto the pro's! We replaced about 500 sq ft of linoleum in our home that we purchased last year. We went to Quality Surplus in Lake Dallas to buy the tile at a fantastic price. Rick, the owner referred us to Greg Bestul of Greg Flooring Service ###-###-####) in Denton. Greg's cost for installation was only $2.50 per sq ft, a LOT lower than other quotes we received. For an additional $200.00, he took up and hauled away the old floring. With the cost of the tile and installation, we came in around $2300 total. We were very pleased with his work and his professionalism; and very pleased with our overall cost!
