We will be moving into our new house here in a few weeks and we need to recarpet the living room and downstairs bedroom. I had no idea that carpet was so expensive, I found a nice alternative that has the pad built in and we can install it ourselves. But dh says we will see the seams, bc the last time he saw it installed was back in 2000 and I guess it looked really bad. I have seen it and it looked really good but it was also 2006 and I am sure it was installed properly by this person. It would save us close to grand by doing it this way. So my ? to you is do you have any experince with this type of product? does it wear well how easy was it to change out a tile if it gets damaged? TIA

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks Rececca B
Thanks everyone for your input. I think I may have sold it to dh, and the kind we are getting already has the glue and padding attached so we dont need to do the glue spreading. and as for price its does work out to be cheaper than doing full on carpet with pad and labor. We have been quoted 2 grand just for carpeting alone and the carpet tile will be 1200 and its nylon with stain resistant.

I have never seen carpet tiles installed that you cannot see exactly where one square starts or ends. I assume that is why it is always installed where it alternates the squares so the squares themselves for a pattern.

I have to say though, it doesn't look like a seam it is just like any other tile, you can see where one starts and ends.

Carpet tile is great.
And if you have extra carpet tiles, you can easily replace it with another one. Thus, always buy a few extra carpet tiles, so that you have extra, in case you have to replace one.
This is the reason, that many commercial installations, use carpet tiles.
It also handles wear and tear well and high traffic.

just redid our room with carpet tile.. i asked basically this same question last week.. it looks great.. my big thing was that its really tight carpet so its easy to clean.. the carpet tile we have doesnt have padding under it and its glued down.. the pattern on mine is stripy so u dont see the seams they kind of blend in.. the only reason we used it was because it was free it was left over from a job my father did.. otherwise carpet tiles are more expensive then regular carpet.. ours is glued right to the wood floor.. u spread the glue over the entire area ur carpeting and let it sit for at least an hour so the glue dries-the kind we had went from white to clear.. then u put the carpet down.. and yes they do come right up if u need to replace one, u just find a seam and pull it up .. as far as wear goes wev had carpet tiles in our garage for years that takes a beating with all the chlorine water, bbq mess, dog mess u name it and its still in decent shape

I am from Holland and it is very common in Europe. The ease of installation, ease of replacement of one tile if it gets a stain, cost even of high quality wool tile all make it very available. Generally it is laid in a pattern, even if it is a solid color you would make the "knit" lines in the tile run 90 to eachother. I grew up with this stuff, and my parents would just replace a tile and wash and dry the dirty one for future use. The bottom was self stick, but eventually you could just use a glue in a tube if they were no longer self stick. Great stuff, just not as well known here in the USA. In Eruope, when you leave a house or apartment, you take your carpeting with you!

as long as you install it with each piece tight against the next you wont see the seams.

My BIL has his own carpet installation company and tile type is his best seller.

My husband used to be a custodian at an elementary school. They used the tile carpeting in the kindergarten rooms. He said it worked well. It was easy to replace tiles once they became too "gross". I don't know how well they held up, but I don't remember him complaining about the durability. I am sure your house will not have the traffic that 30 kindergarteners can create either. :) I thought it looked nice and the seams were not intrusive. I am sure part of it has to do with how well it is installed which my hubby is really handy.

We have it in the office. It lasted 10 years with approximately 30 employees. At about 5 years, some pieces began to peal up and they would replace them as that happened. Then we ran out of the tiles and we had to tape it and try to reglue it. Eventually, they replaced all of it.
