Cleaning Hand Held Mixers

I love to bake and was doing so this weekend. I made a family recipe of knappchen cookies (a German cookie... very thick dough). The dough as I said is so thick and when I was mixing it the dough rode up the mixers until it got up into the opening where you place the mixers. It is a new mixer that I have not used often for doughs. Anyways, the dough is up in the openings where the mixers are put in and I do not know how to clean it out. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

M., I have found that letting the dough dry a bit and then using pipe cleaners works very well. After you have the dough out, spray a pipe cleaner with a disenfectant such as antibacterial hand soap. Do not totally soak the pipe cleaner, but you don't want bacteria in the inside of your mixer either.

Hopefully with a little time, it has dried up and shrunk, and with some toothpicks (or a nut pick or whatever narrow thing you have) you can pick & pull it out?
My dough does this too with the Bosch mixer, but at least I can put the bowl in the sink and immerse it fully, I wouldnt do this with an handheld though! Next time, stop it when the dough rides up that far, pull it back down, as often as necessary? That's the only way I know to avoid this mess in the first place.

I too love scrapbooking (there's a fabulous "clearance" sale going on at wenonah.myctmh.com - you'll want to check it out!) and fall and peppermint and all that. Once you master the stick, you'll truly feel like the master! ;-)

Hi M.,

I do not know how to clean the hand held mixer except maybe q-tips/toothpicks and patience?? ;) However, as I read your "about me," I thought I was reading about myself! It was eerie! We have a LOT in common: baby daughter, baking, teaching, love school, love watching the learning process, arts, crafts, scrapbooking, reading, picnics, fall, writing (you didn't say that, but it seems that way), trying to lose weight (ha), the precious moments of being a mommy, not being able to drive a stick (but fully capable of accomplishing most other things ya set out to do)!

Good luck to you! I hope you like Albuquerque. Not being from here either, it took some adjusting, but now I think it's the greatest for it's 4 mild seasons, desert/mountain landscape, sunsets, huge sky, diversity, and traditions.

I was thinking maybe you could try tooth picks to poke out the dough once it has dried. I hope the cookies were delicious... I want to bake some now!!!
I worked in a little bakery when I was a teenager- and it was one of the best experiences of my life! Good Luck to you and your family!

Try a q-tip or tooth pick.
