Kitchenaid Stand Mixers

I have a chance to get a new Kitchenaid mixer, artisan series, which means the 5 qt bowl. I have a few questions for those who have these mixers. And yes, I have reviewed the other questions about these mixers.

First, I'm concerned that I won't like the stainless steel bowl it comes with. I realize it doesn't have the breaking risk of a glass bowl, but I don't like the stainless bowl of my mixmaster. Can I put it in the dishwasher? Can I put the glass one in the dishwasher?

Also, I have seen a number of recommendations for the bowl cover (splash guard). Are these mixers any messier than others?

And lastly, about the attachments, are they hard to clean? I try to keep hand washing of dishes to a minimum.....just personal preference. I'm concerned about this creating more work for me instead of making my life better.

I love to cook and bake, and think I would enjoy all the mixer could do. But even with my great opportunity, it's a lot of money for me....and a lot of counter space.

What can I do next?

I don't have the Artisan series. I have the Kitchenaide mixer and love it.

The attachments aren't much different from mine (i looked it up) and I have no problem cleaning them.

I wish mine had a splash guard - sometimes mixing things and putting the spatula in (I know- you should have to - it's an old habit) makes things go up...

I throw everything in the dishwasher and mine is 28 years old, no issues. I have the splash guard mostly for things that will fill the bowl or tend to make messes like adding powdered sugar.

The biggest difference between the Kitchen Aid and the other mixers is they last forever.

I don't know what the Artisan series is, but my Kitchenaid is about 15 years old. I think I got it because Martha Stewart would rave on and on about hers. I had another good heavy duty one before (Cuisinart I think) which used to almost die on me every time I had stiff dough (even just cookie dough).

I am the type of baker who uses my mixer constantly and throws stuff in and walks away and come back to it a few minutes later. It still looks and works as if brand new.

I have the stainless bowl which I much prefer to the glass one I had with my old mixer. I find it easy to clean, and I just throw it in the fridge if I have to - I love the big handle.

I do not have the splash guard. I do have flour sometimes fling out but that's because I'm impatient. I sort of dump and go. I had same problem with my last one. It's user error.

I find the attachments all easy to clean. Never had an issue. Can go in dishwasher.

Here's an example of how tough it is. When I first got the mixer, I forgot to switch out the attachments so I was using the whisk attachment to make cookie dough. Never jammed once.

I like how heavy it is. My old mixer would walk across the counter if it got hung up on butter for example. My Kitchenaid doesn't move.

I think you will be pleased.

My KA will be with me until the day I die. Mine is actually at least 30 years old and belonged to my late MIL. My FIL gave it to me when he was cleaning out his house before I got married so I ended up not registering for one but if I hadn't gotten one, I would have pooled every gift card I had to buy one. This thing is a workhorse and will outlive me.

I have the stainless steel bowl, love it, and it's dishwasher safe, as are all of the attachments. I wouldn't let a feature of the mixmaster - which frankly is a lousy, over-priced mixer - influence how you might feel about a KA feature. That stainless steel bowl on the KA has been around forever and I can't imagine a reason to not use it. I have the splash guard and use it almost every time I use the mixer - it allows you to add in flour and other powdery things like powdered sugar without having to stop the machine and without worrying about it poofing back out of the bowl and going all over the place.

FWIW I keep mine under the counter and only take it out when I need it. From Thanksgiving to Christmas it's pretty much out all the time but the rest of the year, it's just a few times a month.

I've had a Kitchenaid stand mixer for ages (not your same model) and I don't use it much these days but I've found all the parts except for the mixer stand itself to be fine in the dishwasher.
Why don't I use it as much?
I discovered and fell in love with a Cuisenart stick blender (the detachable part is dishwasher safe) and the whole thing fits in a drawer.
Even my husband loves it!
Between the stick blender and a small hand mixer I almost never use the blender or stand mixer anymore.
One of these days I'll get rid of small appliances I don't use much anymore and free up some counter/cupboard space.

I have a KitchenAid mixer that is 13 years old; my mom's is around 40 years old (maybe 45 if she got it for her wedding). Both have no problems whatsoever. The stainless steel bowl works great. I handwash because it takes up too much space in the dishwasher, but I'm sure it could go in there. I only use the main paddle and no other attachments. It's easy to clean.

It definitely splashes. I usually just cover it with a dishtowel but the actual splash guard would work better. Flour tends to puff out on any speed and liquid will splash some on medium to high speeds. I am so happy I have it and figure it will last forever.

I used a Kitchen aide stand mixer for several years. My mother had used it for many years before that. I think it had a glass bowel. You might be able to special order one.

My daughter received a Kitchen aide stand mixer as a wedding present 12 years ago. She never uses the shield. Mine didn't have a shield. I suggest the shield is for use when mixing a large batch, of say bread, and adding flour. It keeps the flour from flying out

All parts used for mixing can be washed in the washer. I always have and so does my daughter. I like the stainless steel bowl. It's lighter than glass. It bounces when dropped. It doesn't break when hit, even at an odd angle. I'm a bit of a klutz some times. My daughter gives it to her kids to clean out the bowl. (Whipped cream)

Both the glass and stainless steel can be washed in the dishwasher. An important advantage to using stainless steel is it and the whisk can be chilled in the refrigerator before whipping cream

One advantage to a Kitchen aid is that attachments are avaikable. A dough hook, a whisk, a noodle maker, a citrus squeezer are the ones I know about.

I stopped using my mixer because I didn't use it enough to keep it on the counter and didn't have enough shelf space. I liked the way it worked.

I love mine, yes you can put the bowl in the dishwasher, and I rarely use any of the attachments. I don't even use the splash guard I just always start off slow and gradually increase the speed, that keeps messes from happening.

Love, love, love our KitchenAid. Never had a problem with messiness and don't use a splash guard. I just throw the attachments in the stainless steel bowl, put the whole thing in the sink, and pour hot water in it and let it soak while I'm doing everything else in the kitchen. At some point, I wash them and it's easy-peasy. I admit that I've never put it in the dishwasher, not because I can't, but because I never thought about it.

I love my mixer!! I use it all the time. I have stainless and its great. I don't think I would like the glass but I think it is more of what you are used to. I do use the guard especially for whip cream.

I have some attachments. Not hard to clean and yes you can put them in the dishwasher. I put everything in the dishwasher. I'm thinking about getting the pasta attachment.

I haven't used mine lately but I love it for making body cream. You put the oils in and let it go and scrape cream off the sides and incorporate it back into the mix.

I did not know that they came with a glass bowl. Personally I would not get it. I probably would have it broken and there would be no mixer to use.

Just go for it. It is like buying a good set of "pots and pans" (cookware) as the cost seems so much in the beginning but over the years it does not and if you use it frequently you will get your money's worth.

I don't use the mixer without the shield. The powder flies up and gets everywhere.

I love the stainless bowl. I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't like it. I also have a copper one for whipping cream and angel food cakes.

I don't have any attachments but my mother in law did and used them all the time.

Everything can go in the dishwasher. No reason it can't...

The thing I don't like is that I can't move the beaters around the bowl and get the sides really well. I can't life the beaters up and sling the mix off the beaters either.

Otherwise I love it. I can put stuff in and walk away while it mixes it up. If I use a rubber spatula to clean the sides while mixing stuff up it works out okay.

we use the splash guard for frostings and breads that are mostly flour. we toss all parts in the dishwasher with the exception of the paddle we have because the paint is chippping off and we dont want to risk making it worse. everything else goes in the dishwasher, we wuse ours once a week if not more often and love it. (i don't think its the artisan series though, but its got the 5q bowl in stainless)

I have a 5-qt kitchenaid mixer. I love the stainless bowl - yes, it is dishwasher safe. I don't have a bowl cover. I just add flour slowly so it doesn't poof up - just like with any other mixer.

I don't have any complicated attachments, just the basic mixer, whisk, and hook, and put the attachments into the dishwasher as well, so easy to clean.

I love my Kitchen Aid stand mixer. Never occurred to me to put the attachments or bowl in the dishwasher. They are easy to wash by hand. I have never had an issue with the stainless steel bowl. IMO it is an essential kitchen tool.

I may have a different perspective. I grew up using either a hand electric mixer or an Oster Kitchen Center, which has a stationary mixer on it. My personal favorite is my Hamilton Beach from the 1940s, but I am like that.

My mom recently got the Kitchenaid Professional 6 qt mixer. My husband made pizza dough several times, and mom has used it for various cakes, pies, etc. Since then they have managed to strip the plastic gears inside and it doesn't work, so my dad is having to replace them. That being said, I have always dreamed of having one, so was super stoked to get to use hers.

So, the bowl has an up and down setting. You have to put the bowl on, then maneuver the mixing paddle in under the arm around the bowl to plug it into the arm to use. Then you have to raise the bowl up to reach the mixer. There is no room for the rubber scraper to reach into the bowl to help the stuff inside mix in. You have to turn it off, lower the bowl, scrape, raise the bowl and turn it on again. Repeat. Repeat. The bowl is stationary when it is on the mixer, and so you can't turn it to reach the stuff in the bowl better like you can with a normal mixmaster. I found this very tedious. I felt like I had to "manage" the mixer so much more than I do with either one of my other ones.

Mom got the metal bowl, which is fine, especially because it is so much lighter than glass, but you have be sure not to make anything that will react with metal like gelatin....Oh, and you can't really see into the bowl because it is metal on the sides, and the top is covered by the mixer arm.

I am not saying to get it or not, so many people love them! I will say though, that I was glad I got to try someone else's before I bought my own. I don't really want one now, and neither does my husband. Mom misses her Oster Kitchen Center and would prefer to have it back instead. If there is any way you could borrow one for a few days and do some typical baking that would help you discover if it is really what you want. As for me, I don't.
