Christmas Stockings

I've got a 5 month old son, and my Mom made us all Christmas stockings when we were growing up - and my husband had homemade stockings too. I think that this is a special tradition, so I want to make a cros stitch stocking for my son. I need to start now, so that hopefully I'll be done in time for Christmas (... we'll see, I'm terrible at finishing projects like this...). I'm looking for an easy kit, becuase I'm a beginner with cros stitching. I'm planning on hopefully going to Hoby Lobby this week, if I can get away. But I'm not sure if they'll have them out yet. Any ideas on where to find good stocking patterns on line or actual stores? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Most craft stores have their xmas stuff out already since it takes people awhile to make things. I saw a bunch at Michael's last week.

My kids love their homemade stockings! And your son will love his!

Hobby Lobby already has their Christmas stuff out so don't wait because no matter what sort of kit you choose, it will take a bit of time to get finished. I've done quite a bit of cross-stitch but I chose to use one of the felt kits instead. It contained everything I needed - felts, sequins, threads and instructions. If you know some basic sewing and embroidery then you can do the kit. All the felt pieces are already marked so you don't have to trace anything - just cut, sequin and sew.

Good Luck!

Look at Michaels crafts also. they have a lot of cool stuff like the stocking kits and they are starting to get christmas stuff in. Good luck. My husband had a homemade stocking when we first got married. I have since done things like that for our family. We love traditions.

Hershners.com. BUT, you may want to do a quick fabric one for now. My sister does the fabric ones and they are pretty easy, so I took the one that she made for me to get a pattern and made my son one (shoot! have to make my 4mo's now too, thanks for the reminder!). I am picky on the ones I want to make the family (I do counted cross-stitch, but not much time these days, so these fabric ones will fill in until I find the perfect family ones.

I have absolutely NO luck finding good kits at the craft stores. You'd be better off looking online. JoAnn Fabrics has some on their site. My favorite site to order off of is The Stitchery. I don't have the actual web address, but you can just Google it. They should have some stuff on sale right now. You might want to try a stamped cross stitch as opposed to a counted, they're a little bit easier. Also, look for a kit that has the entire stocking, not just the pattern. I know it's a HUGE undertaking, but it's something that your daughter will have and cherish the rest of her life. :)

We had cross stitched ones as well when we were kids. But my sister in law bought kits for her kids a few years ago (I think from Hobby Lobby or JoAnns) and they were WAY cuter than the crossstitched ones.

Hi there! I second the vote for the The Stitchery from Shaun, I love their stuff! It is nice because they not only have the stocking kits, but usually some matching ornaments or something too and their prices are pretty reasonable. I also get catalogs from Hershnerrs and Keepsake Needlearts and they have very nice things as well. I have never had issues with any of the items I've purchased from those companies; and when I had a little buyers remorse over a shopping spree I went a little crazy on (lol) The Stitchery took what I sent back no questions asked and refunded promptly. Good luck with your project - right now I'm contemplating purchasing one of the tree skirt kits from the Stitchery but I question whether I would actually finish it before I'm 80 ha ha. Have a great day!

Oh, I almost forgot - I get an e-newsletter/ad from a company called 1 2 3 Stitch and they have great prices as well. I special ordered some patterns from them that I had seen in a magazine and was able to get them from this company for less than half of what the others were asking - so maybe they might have a sale going on their holiday stuff and their customer service is terrific! it is www.123stitch.com :)
