Can someone please give me advice on how to make my children play together more nicely. My 2 year old son doesn't seem to enjoy his 4 year old sister around at all and is constantly hitting her. Is there anyway to encourage a more pleasent situation for my family?

What can I do next?

Extreme consistency with your discipline and the "naughty chair" works for me with my two boys. Don't give in to them and they will catch on. Took a little time but works great! Thanks Nanny 911!!!

Hi, The reason your son doesn't like playing w/his 4yr old sister could stem from jealousy - attention issues. At that age - 2 yrs, he may want more or all of your attention. Negative attention is better then no-attention at all I've heard. I think 'time' is all thats needed-- & your persistance to dicipline & teach him not to 'hit' will play a key role. To make sure you divide your time/attention evenly w/both children. It takes alot of patience which you must clearly have if you work with autistic children.. not an easy job. My neices daughter is autistic, she's a cute girl but it's alot of work for my neice. Hope this helps. Best wishes ..

My daughter who is 2 does then same thing. I have begun to try to redirect her. I make her say she's sorry if she hits my son (he will be 5 sunday). They SOMETIMES take turns. I do tell them they have to share over and over. If the fighting over something gets bad I take it away and no one has it. It is soooo frustrating. I know. Hang in there...this too shall pass.

I also found that if they both have something to do...they are nicer to eachother. The newest toys I have are DISCOVERY TOYS that can be played with my multiple ages and THIS REALLY has helped [take a look www.kooltoys1.com]. I am looking forward to laughing about this some day ;)

Hi J.,

I have three children and there are days that two out of the three of them are fighting. I've learned that yelling "cut it out" doesn't work, and is h*** o* my throat. So, I came up with a "special" type of "time out". When they are arguing or fighting. I make them sit on the stairs and hold hads until they can say "I'm sorry" to one another and they can "feel like they love each other again". Well, before you know it, the fighting has stopped, and the giggles have begun and they have forgotten about their disagreement. My kids are 12, 8 & 6. Good luck. :o)

Unfortunely, this is nature sibling rivalry has been going on for centries. You are not the first and you will not be the last to go through the drama of watching our children act this way toward one another. However, if you watch them you will see the love that they have for one another, but sometimes ever children like to have a moment to be with self, meaning that sometimes they just want to play alone and that's okay because eventually your daughter will also want a moment to play by herself. And there will be sometimes when they will spent time together. Just be patience and you will see.
