Changing Time of Toddler Bowel Movement?

I am have a 16 month old. Good kid. Great sleep habits. No waking at night and solid afternoon nap schedule. I hate to complain... but there is one hitch... every morning, my son has his daily bowel movement early... anywhere from 5 AM to 6:30 AM. It seems to wake him up. Of course, I change him, but by that point he is fully awake, the birds are chirping. My husband and I wake up early anyways... a 6:30 wake up is perfect... 6:00 is good. 5:30 is just a little earlier... I don't feed him breakfast until 7:30 AM, and his dinner is usually around 5:45PM. At least he is regular, consistent and it is out of the way frist thing in the morning! I was just wondering if anyone has heard of any ways to shift it at all.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your responses! The fresh fruit has been looking really good in our area with spring season, so we have been snacking much more fruit lately... as a result, he has started having about 2 - 3 smaller bms a day... and not so early in the AM... this is working great. Last night, my son successfully had his first bowel movement on the potty before his bath... previously, he could only pee on the toliet since his bm was so early in the AM. Thanks again for all your responses and support.

I said the same thing with my son when he had a BM at 3:00 3:30 A.M. My doctor was telling me that it might be his time to go then. I couldn't believe that is all they had to say! But we hung in there and got threw it. He is now 19 months and goes later in the day! Thank God!!

hmmm he is pooing 12 hours after he eats dinner... Shift dinner 15 minutes later every night.. I bet his bowel movements get later too. That is how it works in general. Routine spawns routine. If it doesnt work I would be surprised. You also may have to put him to bed a little later as he may poo when he wakes up not the other way around.. Good luck.

Hi ET, Funny you should ask...my son who is also 16 months has recently been having an early morning bowel movement(haven't noted exactly what time yet). He is all the things you say your son is at this point in relation to eating and sleeping habits but never used to wake up w/ a dirty diaper. This has been going on for a couple weeks now and I'm not sure if this is common either, I just thought it interesting that you had a similiar situation. Have you heard from any mom yet about this issue, or even if it's an issue?
Thanks
AH

I found with my 2 kids that their regular bowel movement time slowly changed on it's own . . . usually over the course of a couple weeks. Sometimes it slowly moved to later in the day, sometimes to earlier. I also had one that went regularly in the middle of the night for a while. "Blessings" of motherhood!

I'm afraid there's no manipulating the bodies functions (his or yours) without negative circumstances.

Personally, if that's the only thing I have to worry about with my 16month old, I'd HAPPILY wake up with him and sing with the birds in the early morning hours as I change his poohpie diaper.

Consider yourself somewhat lucky! My 16 month old poops 4-5 times a day.
