Candle Advice

I have a friend who is a rep for Gold Canyon Candles. I have been buying these candles for years. In the last year I have noticed that the quality has diminished. I used to be able to burn the candles all the way down, now they quit with an inch or two left of wax in the bottom. It seems that the wicks are not long enough. When I told my rep she said it was just me. If this were so, wouldn't I have the same problem with other candles? Her response kind of irked me, and I would like to know if this is happening to other users of these candles?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow! Thanks everyone! First off, I did inform my friend that I would no longer buy candles from her. She was offended, but hey, I don't force my Avon on her! Secondly, thanks for all the tips for the leftover wax. I would have never thought to make new candles-genius! Right now I am really hooked on the Scentsy. My sister in law brought one to me last week. I love it! No wicks-ha!
Thanks again!

She just sells them. She has no control over how they are made and as a sales person, she wouldn't pass on to you any other complaints she might have heard. If you are no longer happy with the product, there's no shame in admitting you found another product you like better. Try her stuff every once in awhile, but cut way back if it continues to be sub quality.

Walmart makes a candle (Mainstays, i think) that comes in a variety of scents. They are $3.50 and they compare to Yankee IMO. You can burn them entirely and they fill your house with their scent the entire time you are burning. They are the best candle I have found. I burn them to my hearts content b/c they smell so good and are SO affordable.

I agree that since she is just a sales rep, that she has no control over the quality but she was kind of dismissive when you told her about the diminished quality. Maybe other customers actually are having the same problem and just haven't mentioned it to her. Maybe you can contact someone in customer relations via the Gold Canyon website?? They may be willing to replace the candles that you had the problem with. If not, then I would stop purchasing them. You're not happy with the product so don't waste your money. For the 1-2 inch wax stubs you have left at home, maybe you could try a candle making kit from a craft store like Michael's to re-wick them.

They may have more wax at the bottom now due to safety issues.

I used to sell Mia Bella candles and the wax left at the bottom is a safety issue. If a candle burnt all the way to the bottom, the jar could get hot (remember wax has a flash point where it will catch on fire) and the jar could shatter from the excessive heat. What I suggested to my customers is to get a simmer pot that plugs in and you can break the wax out of the jar and put it in the pot to finish getting the scent out of the wax.

It is bothersome when you have so much candle left and no wick. I do understand the safety issues.

I usually place all of my candles in a bowl or on a dish with at least 1/2 to 1 inch of water. This way if anything funky happens with the candle or the jar it is already in water.

The candles at Walmart are divine. I use them all the time. They have such a variety of scents and lasts for a very long time.

I have noticed that too. The candle has about an inch of wax in the bottom, my friend told me that it was because when it burned all the way down to the wick end, it somehow could catch more on fire into big flames. Don't know how. I bought one of the candle warmers at Michaels and use that for the ones that have stuff in the bottoms.

B.,
I've sold Gold Canyon for 10 years now. Your friend should have told you about the safety wicks that are in place. The wicks will burn down to the top of the wick collar, and then extinguish themselves. This has already been factored into the published burn times. Some of our heavier scents have wick issues from time to time. Your rep should have taken your complaint seriously, and done an exchange for you. Gold Canyon wants their customers to be happy, so she should have submitted an exchange (free to her). Have you tried our pods? They fit in the scentsy warmers, and smell better too! Your candles jars should never be black-if you trim your wick before burning, and properly extinguish them (dipping), then your jars should be crystal clear.
