Huntington beach has a Hilton right across the street overlooking the beach. Right next to it is main st. with a lot of shops and restaurants. Laguna beach, Newport beach, corona del mar, fashion island is right in Newport with great shopping, balboa peninsula. Seal beach is nice also. And of course I agree with Hollywood too! Hollywood and highland has tons of shops and dining or Santa Monica 3rd st. Promenade lots of shopping and dining and not far from beach and hotels are close by.

I am not sure if you are talking about Nor Ca or So Cal.
If you are going to So Cal, I have to second Hollywood. There are wax museums, shopping, chinese theater, and it's a nice walk. My favorite is Seal beach, lots of cool shops around too. Im not sure about hotels because I live here and don't need one.
There is always Hearst Castle, boat ride to Catalina, the Queen Mary, all in Souther California.
If you are going to Nor Cal, I like Half Moon Bay. Going to San Francisco would be fun for your girls. Old Town Sacramento is a nice walk with shopping and good food, Santa Cruz Beach Board walk is fun, shopping, a beach and an amusement park all in one. Monterery Bay Aquarium is nice, there's always the mountains to go visit.
Have fun in Cali.

We just got back from California with our 4 teenagers (13 yo girl, 15, 16 &17 yo boys). We loved the beach (Huntington, seal, and then north at Monterey, & Carmel) On the I 5 in L.A. just north of Beverly Hills there is an AWESOME outlet mall...looks like a giant castle. This is the end of the clearance line for the Gap, Limited, Eddie Bauer etc. The best shopping (and greatest deals) in all of Cal. We loved Yosemite. The giant redwoods at the south end of the park with a short hike from the south gate are just incredible if you've never seen them. The main drag drive through Yosemite valley is just awe inspiring, as is the drive out to glacier point. If you're staying south, San Diego is a lot of fun. The Zoo is the most amazing zoo ever, but our kids are a bit too old to think it is as great as it is. I would add Horton Plaza for shopping with lunch at Kansas City BBQ.
Have fun!

really depends on where in California you are talking... by the list of attractions I am guessing southern Cal. but LA or San Diego? If San Diego- Coronado can no be beat for the the beach- Hotel Del is beautiful but expensive- but you can stay in Downtown San Diego and get to Coronado easily- otherwise up the Coast there are tons of great beaches and places to stay... really depends and where you want to be... northern Cal is a totally different list- Lots of area to cover....

Beverly Hills is a tourist place you need to hit just so you can say "Ive been there"... you can take Ventura Blvd straight to Ventura Beach from there. Ventura has "Harbor Village".... it's an entertaining area.

Try the beaches north and south of Monterey, and visit the aquarium in Monterey.

Hollywood! The girls would love it..."people watching" was one of our family pastimes in Hollywood!

Olvera Street is also a must see and a fun shopping time!

I grew up in South Gate, Ca. which is by Long Beach and Watts...and we always went to Cherry Beach or Seal Beach...I am sure you can find some hotels all around, but not sure about being right on the beach?

Muscle Beach, AKA: Venice Beach is also a nice "people watching" place.

There are so very many beaches...I am sure you will get a nice range of suggestions all along the coastline!

Have Fun!
