My husband & I were looking to buy a pearl necklace for his sister as a wedding gift. We shopped around New York 5th Ave & ended up buying them from Tiffany's. They have a great history of good quality & we were very pleased with their prices as well. My friends step mother worked at Marshall Fields now Macy's in jewelry & she said they have very good quality jewelry.

Pearls can be expensive.......freshwater and cultured are both nice, but I would buy them at a jewelry store......not a department store......then you know what you are getting.......I like Kay's Jewelry, but look around.....

You can also look up the different kinds on the internet to see which one is better for lasting in color and quality.

Good Luck.

Nearly all spherical pearls are cultured. Freshwater pearls tend to be the least expensive, and are sometimes cultured, sometimes not. To the best of my knowledge Mikimoto pearls are still the best spherical pearls on the market.

To educate yourself on pearls, start going to jewelry shops and asking. Any good shop will be more than pleased to talk all about pearls with you. Especially hit up shops that do not work on commission.

Do be warned ahead of time... a single mikimoto pearl can cost well over 1000 dollars. The 27" necklace my mum bought in Japan for $1500 (in the 1970's) is today valued at over 60k.

Costco always has good quality and great prices. I don't think you have to be a member to shop online.
