Hi Mamas,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good reads on sensory processing disorders in children for me to read?

Thank you!

FYI Raising a Sensory Smart Child is written by Lucy Miller. She is an OT while the Out of Sync Child is written by an educator. I am a pediatric OT at Doernbecher Children's Hospital. I frequently recommend both of these books! Out of Sync is an easier read meant for parents & teachers. Sensory Smart is a bit more in depth. If you want an easy read start with Out of Sync & the Out of Sync Child has Fun is a good book of activities. There are some good OT's in Vancouver and Portland that specifically address Sensory processing issues. Let me know if you want some names.

I found the Out of Sync child to be not as great as everyone told me it was, but I found The Sensory Processing Disorder Answer Book: Practical Answers To The Top 250 Questions Parents Ask to be amazingly great. It helps answer the more basic questions without complicating it more. It's such a new "disorder" that it's not even in the medical journal. This book does what it says, answers the questions parents ask. What better way to get simple answers. Also how old is your child? My daughter is in Early Childhood PreSchool and it's been amazing for her. So much that this year (she's only been in it one school year including one month during the summer), that they said she is ready for regular preschool!!!! Good luck to you, it's an up and down ride.

I have red the Out os Sync Child, and The highly sensitive child. The highly sensitive child had a little less on SPD but I found it more helpful with ideas on dealing with being really VERY sensitive. hope that is helpful.

I read the Out-of-Sync Child by Carol Stock Kranowitz. It was a good starting book that the doctor recommended.

We read the Out of Sync Child, but I liked Raising A Sensory-Smart Child better. I found that it had more helpful tips and examples - both sets of grandparents are now reading their own copies, too.

Hi D.,
I've been asked this question many times, so I posted my favorite SPD books here: www.makingsenseofspd.com. I've read all these books, and I've found it's nice to have an arsenal on hand depending on the day, etc.
