Bone Density Study

My 4 1/2 yr. old daughter has had some tests done that revealed she has higher than normal concentrations of sodium and calcium in her urine. The doctors wanted us to change her diet to reduce sodium intake and redo the tests, as she could be at risk for kidney stones. The redo tests showed lowered sodium, but her calcium and protien levels were still above normal, so we have to repeat the 24 hr. urine test yet again, but the doctor also wants to do a bone density study to see if her bones are losing calcium thru her urine. If that is the case she would need drug therapy to decrease her risk of kidney stones and to improve her bones. Anyone had a bone density study done and know what to expect? Know of anyone on the drugs?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Good news! bone density is normal for her age, and reducing the sodium and increasing her fluid intake has made the numbers go down. I'm still having trouble understanding why she has the problem, since her sodium intake was'nt any more than any other child. the doc did say that it can run in the family, but I never had a problem till I was 43! We will be doing more follow ups so hopefully all will keep improving! Thanks for the help!

Okay, this is one test that is actually a piece of cake. She will simply lay on a table as the scanner goes over her and it should take about 10 minutes. The hard part is, she will have to lay very still. That's it! Just make sure she is not wearing any metal that day, like jeans or whatever. They'll tell you all of this before the appointment but really, the test is nothing at all to worry about.

If she's losing calcium, I would think they may just put her on something like the chewable calcium with vitimin D, like Viactiv. For adults, they typically put us on Furosimide (sp?). I'm on both and would know the spelling but I take the generic version.

Take care and I hope all turns out well!

I have had bone density tests as an adult. it is painless, you just lay on a bed and a machine scans you. I hope it is the same with kids. good luck

I know the bone density test is like an x-ray machine and is painless.

I had a bone density several years ago and if I recall correctly it was just a scan and nothing to fret over. I have also had calcium issues and ended up having parathyroid issues. I would think some blood work would be in order to check the blood calcium levels and PTH. I have been advised that even I was too young at 30 to have a problem with my parathyroid, but it can happen at any age- just not the norm for someone so young.

A bone density study or DEXA scan is very easy. A person lays on a table while a special x-ray machine moves over you. It is important to lay still, which souled probably be the hardest part for a child. It is not invasive. It does not take very long either. Good luck to you and your daughter. Liz

I have had one and it is really nothing. It is like an MRI actually. You are put on a padded bed-like and slid into the machine where they scan up and down. It is not an invasive procedure and the only problem I could see is the antsyness of a 4-year-old.
