Go by the cookbook...just treat the box of brownie mix as O. of the ingredients!
I am baking brownie bars and my recipe in my cookbook says to use a Turtle brownie mix. I did but the directions on the brownie box are different than the recipe tells how to make the bars. Do I just go by what the recipe in the cookbook tells me? Perhaps the recipe tells me to add another egg to make the brownies thicker into bars? When I take the brownies out the mix still sticks to the toothpick when I go by the recipe directions and it would be longer according to the box.
I bake a lot but this is a new recipe. The coconut looks light brown. I am worried it was cooked too long. This is hard to get everything just right.

Do what the directions in the cookbook tell you. If you need to cook it a little longer than what the cookbook says, then cook them a bit longer. Cooking times are just general guidelines (in recipes). I typically cook cupcakes less than what they tell me to because of my oven. Sometimes I have to cook other things longer.
Use the cookbook...you are following that recipe, not the one on the brownie box...it's just one ingredient...you'll be fine!!! stick with the plan!! :)
If you stick the toothpick in the middle of any brownie recipe it probably will come out with some batter on it. Try sticking it 2 inches from the side of the pan and see if it comes out clean there. I usually go by the sides,if it is pulling away from the pan a little, they are done.
