I have honestly never noticed. How they wipe doesn't really matter to me so long as they wipe.
Is there a rule to how one wipes their bum? I guess when he can do it, he will do it.
Hi mamas--
At what age should kids know to stay seated while wiping? My husband thinks our 5 year old should be doing it. He still stands to wipe. It never occurred to me to have him stay seated. Just wanted other thoughts on this. Thanks!
Okay, thanks mamas! I am going to print this off for my hubby to read. :)

Why does it matter as long as he gets the job done?
I think your husband is trying to create a problem where none exist.
I'm 44 and I often stand up to wipe, I think it's easier and cleaner (I find that I like to keep my hands as far away from the rim/toilet water as possible, especially after a BM!) Is there something odd about that? I think as long as your son is doing a good job you should let him do it in a way that feels good to him.
Um... it doesn't matter if he stands or sits.
Main thing is he wipes his bum.
There are adults, that stand to wipe.
Each person is different.
wow! Oh, what we learn on Mamapedia!
I teach all kids in my care to sit....so they don't smear on the seat when they get up. Learned this the hard way when dealing with potty-training multiple kids. :)
Why does it matter is he stands to wipe? I know my 10 year old still does I am not sure about my other on he closes the door. And shoot I still do cause it's just easier.
i agree with heidi m. i also have a 10 year old and who still stands to wipe. and will call me in to help if need be. why does there have to be an age for that!!
I'm 30 and I stand to wipe. It never even ocurred to me that people sat to wipe until I was married and saw my husband sitting. I still think it's odd.
My boys learned to wipe themselves while sitting. In my experience in helping them, it was easier to "get in there" while sitting (the cheeks spread a bit!) than while standing, when everything is kind of clenched closed. A lot less mess when sitting. But hey, whatever works!
Uh, my 6 year old girl stands or crouches to wipe. Who cares, as long as they're actually wiping?! I think he's creating a problem where there is no problem.
I agree with everyone else. But also, the bathroom is a private place and very soon he'll be shutting the door and doing it all privately so you won't know anyway.
I think he needs to do whatever is comfortable for him to get the job done, whatever his age.
