I am preparing to relocate to San Antonio, TX. I will be employed downtown along Dolorosa and Nueva. I do not know where I'll reside at this point. I've been told the NW and NE areas are best. I have a 20 month old daughter that will be attending day care for the first time.

I'm also interested in thoughts about the city's public transportation network. I will not have personal transportation upon arrival and I'd like to get a feeling for the amount of strain that will (not) be in this area. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I moved to San Antonio 15 years ago from Maryland. I've lived on the Northside and on the outskirts on the NE side. I now live in Converse (just outside San Antonio). I love it out here. There's not a lot of traffic. Where you want to live here all depends on how much traffic you want to put up with. My opinion is the North and NE side are the best. Good luck! You'll love it here!

Hi, I am a single mother of three that just relocated down here from Nebraska in June. I have a brother who has been here for 10 years though. I used the mysanantonio.com to find my home. It is in the NorthCentral part which is great. The Northwest and Northeast sides are good too. The Northwest side has cheaper living but still nice areas. My choice to live in Northcentral was so I could be closer to my brother and his family but the difference in rental price for a home is like $200-$300 per month. If you only have one child though, you could get by with an apartment for sure. There are some really nice ones but I don't know if you are wanting a house or apartment or what.
My kids have a babysitter that comes to our house which is great. I found them on craigslist.com. I posted an ad and they responded. They are sisters. There are a lot of daycares here but if your daughter is use to an in-home, I would try to find that again. There are a lot of those too. You can get a list of them with addresses and phone numbers through the mysanantonio.com site. If you are working downtown, I would try to find something a little closer for housing. There are some nice apartment complexes closer to downtown that are in safe neighborhoods. If you live out a ways and have to get to work in the a.m. with school started now, it could take a while to get there everyday and get home. That can be really frustrating unless you have the time and don't mind sitting in your car. I had to drive downtown from North 281 past Stone Oak Parkway a few times in the morning. I had to be there at 8:00a.m. and it took me 45 minutes one day and 35 minutes the next. If there were no traffic it would only take 20 minutes but the traffic down here is horrible. The rush hour traffice at the end of the day is even worse and can take an hour to get home. That's another reasone why I like having my babysitter come to my home so that my kids don't have to sit in the car for that long. Anyway, good luck with everything. I hope everything turns out okay.

Hello A.,

I have lived here for 22years. North Central and North East are the better places. Stay away from the South Side and the West Side. There is gang activity wherever you go, but it seems to be higher there. As for daycare, I would stay away from PCI. They are not the best to leave your child with. Personally I would try to find one that is in home. Also, you want to stay away from living in the downtown area. And yes traffic is horrible here. And I hope that you are willing to burn your butt off because with the humidity it gets really hot here. One more thing you should know is that we don't get alot of rain here and right now we are on water conservation. We are under very strict rules for using our water. I hope this helps.

Thats correct the NW and NE side is the best.(personal opinion- it's newer) NE is a bit more residential and less conjested than NW. I have been here for 10 months and live in the NW- close to downtown (about 30 minutes in traffic) As far as daycare- I am a stay at home mom and really not familiar with any good ones. Theres alot of them. You might check with your employer they might have suggesstions. Possibly might find one close to your work? Hope this helps. C.
