My sweet sister has a beautiful little girl who will have ear tubes inserted soon and she does not know what to expect other than knowing it is a day surgery. Any thoughts? Can you share your experience? Did it help your child significantly?

What can I do next?

Hi L.,

Like a lot of other Mom's my son had no problems at all with tubes being put into his ear.

My little guy came out of the surgery a little cranky, but after he was giving some juice he was fine. We were back at home within hours like nothing ever happened.

Super easy for all parties involved. It made such a difference in my little guy it was well worth it!!!! No more ear infections!!!!

Best of luck to your sister and her family.

My little one was two when we had tubes put in. We should have done it sooner. It helped so much. On the very first day she was like a differant kid. She was talking more clearly and using more words within days. It was wonderful. (The surgery and recovery went well. Just watch for fever and such things.) Later my baby had a 2nd set put in and they helped as well. So, I think all will be fine. Good luck. Try not to worry.

Both my boys have had tubes put in under the age of 1. They both had immediate relief. We were very nervous the day of the surgery. But... the entire process went by so fast. We were in and out of the hospital in 1.5 hours. The surgery took 10 minutes and then we got to go into the recovery room and hold them. When the baby wakes up out of anestesia they will feel funny and confused. Both my boys cried for about 10 minutes and then were fine. Both were running around and playing by lunch time. Tell her to be careful though because their balance will be off the first few days.

She'll do great!

My now 14 year old had tubes put in at 10 months and it made a huge difference. She had chronic ear infections starting at about 3 months and the tubes made all the difference in the world. I was very nervous as well. We went in early and they gane her a "drink" (sedative) and we were able to hold her unitl she was very drowsy so that when they took her back she was very relaxed and comfortable. Surgery was quick and within no time I was rocking in her in the recovery room. As soon as she was awake and alert we were able to take her home. She slept alot that day and afterwards you would not have known that she had anything done to her. Hope that helps to ease the fears.

Yes, It helped my son drastically. My son had tubes put it at 13 months. He was having ear infections everytime we turned around, he would get on antibotics and a few days after he was finished with the antibotics he would get another ear infection.
He will be 4 tomorrow and has only had 3 very mild ear infections. The worse part was coming out of surgery cause everything was louder than before it freaked him out and scared him. He had some hearing loss and had speech delays cause of it but has progressed very well.
I hope this helps.

My son was almost 13 months old when he got tubes. The morning of the surgery we had to get him up really early to be at the hospital at 5:45am, surgery was at 7am. That hour and 15 minutes was a bit tough, keeping him occupied and nothing to eat or drink. They came and took him back at 7am and I was in recovery with him by 7:10am. He was very confused coming out of anesthesia. Totally grumpy and crabby. As soon as he took a drink from his sippy cup we were allowed to go home. We were back home by like 8:15am. He pretty much slept all day, he was up around 4-5pm and then again from 7-8pm then slept all night. I think the anesthesia hit him hard.

No ear infections at all after that, until yesterday when I took him in because he wasn't feeling well and they discovered that his right tube had already fallen out. We had them checked a month ago and all was well. So in that month, his tube fell out and he now has an ear infection!!! So, I'm headed back to the ENT.

Good luck! I hope your niece feels better soon.

My daughter had hers at 13 to 14 months old. The ear tubes have been one of the best things I ever did for her, it was a miracle. No more ear infections, she wasn't walking and began walking and talking like crazy within the week. (With all the fluid in the ear it messed up her equilibrium, tubes cured that very quickly).

Her surgery only took 15-20 minutes, coming out of the anesthesia was a little hard for her but only because she was scared. She cried for a few minutes, they let me hold her and about 10 minutes later she was fine. We went home ate lunch, and the rest of the day was normal. She acted like it was just another day and was effected by the surgery at all.

She had ear infections twice a month (at minimum) before the tubes and has not had one since the tubes were put in over two years ago.

Yes, my son came into recovery singing. The doctor told us that he was so happy to be relieved from the pressure he had been experiencing. What I didn't know at the time is the discussion of pre and probiotics and ear infections. Anyone who takes antibiotics should consider adding these to their diet.
