Anime Convention

My and my hubby are nerds. We go to maybe 5 or 6 conventions a year. One of the ones we go to is family friendly and very soon. My husband wants to take our oldest 2 (10 and 11). I am less convinced, I know that they would both enjoy it greatly, and it would be a great experience, even just for 4 or 5 hours. However i know that there will be costumes, panels, and shows, that are not age appropriate. I would feel better if they were maybe 2 or 3 years older. I just feel like I will have to limit what they can do and i don't want too have to. Any Advice?

What can I do next?

I took my son to a renaissance faire when he was 10. Having attended quite a few myself, I had a talk with him before hand about what he might see. It was a little local one though, and I thought naw, there wont be anybody dressed to scantily. OMG! We had such a blast laughing and joking and discussing what people were wearing and why on earth some of them would choose such an outfit. he's 14 now and we still talk and laugh about it. it was a wonderful experience and a good opportunity for discussing life, I vote you take them!

okay - your husband doesn't want your 11 year old to go to a school dance but he wants to take her to an animae convention?

If they are already interested in animae they will have fun. They have already seen the inappropriate items/dresses/characters...so what is the difference?

If you want this to be JUST THE TWO OF YOU - which it sounds like you do - then instead of making excuses tell him outright - I want this to be just for us...

GOOD LUCK!!

Let him take them. I think it's so cute that your family can share in this passion. 10 and 11 is old enough..

I would not take mine, not until at least 13.
We are also nerds , but MANY costumes and things at conventions are not for kids.
Not just costumes , don't forget the dealers room. Many things on display are not for little eyes. I can think of at least a few dealers.

ETA: DH does not agree with me.

let me edit again by saying that some of the smaller cons might be ok. the larger ones absolutely not.

IF it's family friendly. Some people REALLY get carried away when "getting dressed." It sounds like fun and you should take them.

We took my son to one in orlando right before we officially moved here and he was only 4. It was the best day he ever had according to him because he saw Spidermans and other heros.

Uhm...so I Googled "Anime Convention." Then I clicked images.

All I can say is...whoa.

Some of those folks are dressed for a DIFFERENT type of convention. I mean...bras? Garters? Bustiers?

I think waiting a few years might be a good idea.
