I have a 5 month old son and he seems to sneeze a lot and also act like he is choking sometimes. Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice on the subject would be great. Should I be worried that he has allergies?

What can I do next?

K.,

My 4 1/2 month old daughter was doing this as well and it was the beginning of a head cold. I went to the doctor, but there was nothing they could do for her. I have a humidifier going at night and that seems to help. I would go to the doctor if you are concerned though. I do not take any precautions.

I had the same problem with my daughter. She was to little when they diagnosed her with seasonal allergies so i used little noses drops and a humidifier and it helped but didn't cure it. She is 16 months now and we still suffer with this it is especially bad here where i live with the weather switching from hot to cold and back again. And I am pretty sure that like me she is allergic to azealas. I have to give her children's claritin and watch her because she is prone to upper respiratory infection and sinus infection.

My son used to do this too. The doctor told me that it is normal and that the sneezing keeps baby's nasal passages clear. Also, the choking - she said - was from not burping him enough. She said that I should try to burp him every two ounces, which was a lot more work, but it stopped him from doing that. Good luck to you and your son.

Hi Kristen. My son also sneezed alot at that age, also had coughing fits. The doctor was useless because they always checked his chest and of course found nothing. He suffered for months untill I wised up. ALLERGIES HELLO !! They dont want infants under 6mths. to take benadryl or anything with antihistamine in it but you can use saline drops. That is if you can get it up his nose. haha After the 6 mth. mark you can use the childrens benadryl about 2ml every 4-6 hrs. Its a god sent. Also just keep a bottle of water handy it helps with the itchy throat. good luck.

a friend of mine told me about a dust mite that doesn't die very easily no matter how clean your house is.
I sprinkle borax on the floors and leave it for a couple of hours and then vaccum.it kills them all out.Iusually do it once a month.we don't have sneezing children anymore.

My son was quite the little sneezer too. It finally slowed down now that his is 11.5months. He still sneezes three in a row when he does though. check with your pedetrician for a peace of mind. Some babies are sneezy though.

my baby does this too. babies have no other way of clearing their nose except to sneeze. she has done this since the day she was born. also choking if she drools alot or eats alot of formula it comes up a little. she did this and we thickened her bottles with rice cereal and this helped immediately. don't lay them down until about 30 minutes after he eats and try thickining your formula. her doctor gave us permission to do this. you may have to get different nipples but don't make the hole yourself. my daughter almost choked to death because of a hole I poked in a nipple.

My daughter is sneezy...but I think she gets that from me. I sneeze in multiples...usually more than 6. Our pediatrician said its nothing to worry about...some babies just sneeze more than others. My son did as well. As for the choking...my daughter did that ALOT. So bad that breastmilk or formula would come out of her nose. My mother in law almost called 911 when she was babysitting one evening! I was told she would grow out of it at about 6 months. She's 8 months now and I rarely have that problem.

Allergies could be one possibility. Sneezing is definitely a sign and the choking could be from postnasal drip. I would ask your doctor for sure. :)
