Aldi Stores

Anyone have an opinion on Aldi stores? There's a new one opening in Flower Mound and I was going to go check it out tomorrow. I've heard some people say that they absolutely love it, especially canned goods (for pricing), but others have told me to stay away from their dairy products. I've also heard that their canned veggies are actually Del Monte brand, just with their own label; anyone else heard that? Just curious about others' opinions. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the opinions! The majority seem to like it, and I was going to try it out anyways, just to see for myself. We got a coupon in the mail announcing their grand opening, and I read the fine print about cash and checks only. But thanks for the heads up on the shopping carts and grocery bags! Not knowing about that ahead of time would probably have ruined the whole experience, so thank you!

They make Walmart look expensive!

There have been very few things that I've tried and did not care for. The majority of the items are just as good as the name brand if not better.

Watch out for special buys. If you like them stock up because it may be a long time before they offer that item again.

i haven't read all the other responses and probably a bit late but,
You should sample food before you buy a whole bunch at once until you know if you like it or not. Some of it is really salty but some is really good. I have bought the chips, cereal, eggs, milk, salad in a bag, some dairy and produce and other things. The prices are really reasonable. The produce looks really good and tastes good.
Bring a quarter for the carts.

I love it! .39 avocados and they are the same size and quality of the .89 cent ones at Kroger. I loved the shredded cheddar cheese too, and it is a least a dollar cheaper a bag than other stores.

I love Aldi and found nearly all their products as good or better quality than name brands. Particularly their diapers, corn chips, canned foods, toothpaste, deodorant, breakfast cereal, cookies, pasta, pasta sauce...actually the list just goes on. Sometimes the fresh food can be limited though. I've always found the milk, cheese and yogurts fine.

Love, love, love our Aldi! There is no way I could afford to grocery shop without it. The only thing I don't like are the "box soups" (the trader joe's ones are better and not too much more expensive) and my husband does not like their cheapest deli meat but enjoys the premium brand.

Other than that, Go Aldi!! Love.

I habitually purchase almost everything there, including milk (cheaper by $1 gallon here than other stores), eggs, cereal, chips, pretzels, crackers, coffee, butter, fresh fruit, baby carrots, celery, lettuce, avocados, pasta and sauce, frozen vegetables, baking ingredients, breakfast bars, quick-cooking oats, boca burgers (the real deal!), treats, ice cream, frozen hamburger patties and I swear, their skin care line rocks!

Oh, and the chocolates are divine. :)

You'll find a lot of store brand items that are just as good as name brands, and some have two levels, regular and premium (like the grandessa sauce or cookies) for two price points. They also have a lot of name brands as special buys. They have a money-back guarantee, so if you don't like it, take it back. No questions. Even if you already opened it/ate some/whatever. I have used that before.

I do a lot of my holiday shopping there, too, as they have some great buys on toys when the season comes around.

Can you tell I really love Aldi? :)

I like to shop at Aldi for some things. I buy their cereal and their crackers and chips. SO much cheaper than the regular grocery store!

Everything in their private labels is made by some name manufacturer and then their private label is slapped on it.

For us it's been trial and error. My husband loves that I can get pretzels and chips for a fraction of the price! We don't care for their bread and we buy organic milk and eggs so we don't buy Aldi brand.

Why not go and poke around? Start with a few things and see if you like them! It's worth saving the money!

I go to Aldi on a weekly basis. Some products are just as good as the brand name, others not so much. You can determine that for yourself. I rarely buy the meat, it's a limited selection. The veggies need to be used within a couple of days, the milk, chips and snacks are pretty good. Cheap prices with some brand names mixed in. I have a friend who actually said Aldi's was too expensive. Huh? No idea where the heck she shops instead. They are very cheap. I spend $60-$80 each week almost. I buy my meat elsewhere, but that's fine.

I live in West Fort Worth and ours is quite nice. Well lit, clean, etc. The produce doesn't have a very long shelf life, but the milk/yogurt has been fine. Their frozen stuff is fine. Good value on chips, juices, est. I get some things at Aldi, Albertsons, and Target.

usually it is, larger brands and chains trying to sell what they can not move, under a different label. Some are off brands of local producers that cant make it into the big supermarkets. Some are European, and some are just plan generic. NOTHING wrong with this. I like Aldi's for some things, and not for others. Our store has limited produce and Dairy. I dont mind the dairy products I have never had a problem with them. I do shop occasionally when I have the proper time to go through every single aisle. With our store there is very little rhyme or reason to how they display things. To me it looks like where there is open space they just shove another pallet of stuff out. Its very hard to shop in a speedy manner when you have to look at everything. Bring your own bags, or pay 5 cents a bag for theirs. They generally dont take many credit cards, they like cash, and no checks. You need 25 cents to rent the carts, but you get it back when you return them.

I LOVE Aldi! And I have no problems with their dairy. You have to watch the produce tho, some can spoil quick depending on what you get and the season. I don't buy too many canned foods, mostly frozen. Cereals are also very comparable. I love their prices. That's my first grocery stop for the week, then to Walmart or Target for what they don't have.

My SIL works there. She loves it.
Their milk is Dean's brand and hormone free, also cheaper than the grocery store sells it.
I do not have one near me. Our old house we did, I didnt like it there because there was no organization to it whatsoever and I thought that was annoying, but I also lived in the ghetto, so there ya go. :)
My SIL says hers is very clean and organized. I might have to venture out to one. :)

I shop there but the grocery by me has better prices on meat so I usually skip that part. I do buy the milk, and the eggs. I find their yogurt is sweeter than my usual but the kids like it. Their frozen waffles rival Eggos and we do like their ice cream when I buy it. My kids go through ramen noodles liked crazy so I get it there and they use packet of seasoning for 2 packs noodles. Their canned veggies are good, not soggy or extra steamed. I hate Libby's for that reason. I like to get frozen fish there since it is a great price. And yes the cereals are a much better price. The one thing I have noticed in reading the label is 2-3 grams LESS sugar than the name brand. Also, as mentioned, their fruits and veggies are not the freshest but sometimes you get there just after delivery and totally worth it. But check the grocery near you first to see the current pricing. Bananas are usually the best price at Aldis but other stuff is hit or miss.

The one I went to definitely wouldn't be a 'one stop' shopping place. I would rather spend the extra money and save time at a Wal Mart/Target/Kroger - ie a store with a wider variety. Plus one one I went to smelled funky and was a turn off for another excursion there.

Aldi is owned by the same company that owns Trader Joe's. I like shopping at Trader Joe's. Aldi is kind of gross to me. And putting in a quarter to use a shopping cart is just one more added step that makes it a pain in the butt to shop there with kids. Yes, their prices are pretty low, but I can get way better deals on name brand foods if I use coupons.

Their produce is cheap, but I don't find it to be very fresh. I have never tried their meat or dairy products, but I have never heard anyone rave about them.

The store is definitely worth checking out. You might find that the staples you keep in your house are much cheaper there.

I usually just go there for produce, which is very cheap. I've gotten milk there before but have not gotten any canned foods. Be sure to bring your own bags if you don't you'll have to buy plastic or paper ones. Also bring a quarter for the carts, you get your money back when you return it. They also don't accept credit cards but will accept a debit card.

Hello, A.! We have an Aldi in our area. I have shopped there 5 times, and each time I came out with more for my money. My main reason for not shopping there more often is that they do not offer a large enough selection of a variety of meats. Their salad dressings, milk, eggs, cheeses, fresh vegetables and pruduce, the canned veggies, soups, sauces, that I have tried, have been good quality. Breads, rolls, crackers, chips, cookies, margarine, frozen chicken wings, and frozen vegetables and pizza, all just fine. Some of the frozen dinner entrees leave much to be desired, but I made my favorite family dessert with their off-brand whipped cream, cream cheese, and instant pudding, and it was every bit as good, at a fraction of the price! You need to take your own bags, or buy theirs for a minimal price (they have paper or plastic, and save them for next time), and you will need a quarter to borrow a basket, but you get it back when you return it. I say try it out, try a few products at a time, and see what you think. It will be worth the savings for you, I think! Bless you!!!

I like Aldi. I drive to one that's a little farther away because it's newer and nicer. Most of their stuff is good. The cookies and cereal are really good, the crackers not so much. I've never had a problem with their dairy. I don't know if their canned veggies are Del Monte or not. They taste like any other canned veggie to me. The thing I love the most is saving $$. I save so much when I shop there and definitely get much more for my money.

We were out in Frisco, so we checked out Aldi. Yuck, yuck, YUCK. There were flies all over the molding produce. Dust EVERYWHERE. On the floors, the shelves, the food. Dents in all the boxes and cans. The dairy cases had a film of dust, dirt or something inside all the doors. Dead bugs allover the floors. The place was just so nasty. I can't believe they are even allowed to operate in those conditions. (And I'm not even a neat freak!) I'm pretty sure the store opened in 2010, and we went in 2011. It was already that disgusting. Since I've only seen the one store, I obviously can't vouch for any others. I know that experience was so awful, I don't have any temptation trying another.

Ya and bread they slap a generic label on them but its all the same diapers, flour, sugar just put a generic label on it it comes for the same manufacturer the bread came from the lady who works at the bread store all the others i've heard here n there..
I shop there for almost everything I stay away from their nuts it has a distinct taste that I don't like, pickles.I mainly go for the fresh fruit it is cheaper than others & Walmart n other stores carry the same brands, canned goods are good never had an issue,100% Cranberry juice, salad mixes, fresh veggies, frozen food items if needed hamgurger it cooks well and tastes fine, all their frozen ice cream popsicles are good and fairly priced compared to others.I would go check it out but if you want to try it buy it becasue they won't have it next time you go get it they change frequently very and they run out of the special purchases real quick plus you can always return it if your not happy with it...

Aldi brands are for the most part really good -- they sell a stuffed rigatoni in the frozen section that is awesome, and I haven't found it anywhere else. I shopped there often when we first moved to our town, but you can't get everything there. Then I bought ground beef once that was just revolting. After that, I stopped going as often and now we have so many dietary restrictions due to allergies that it wouldn't even be worth it, as many of the things I liked from there were prepackaged and highly allergenic for the family now. We eat almost exclusively whole foods now, so there isn't much there I would buy any more. But we never had any trouble with anything but the meat.

I went with all three of my kids and didn't know you have to bag your own groceries so it was a nightmare for me. I haven't been back since. But I have heard they have the best prices on oatmeal and nuts, which I buy a lot of. If I go back, I won't bring kiddos.
