AIG Financial Troubles - Are Our Life Insurance Policies at Risk?

Both my husband and I have our life insurance policies with AIG. I know they are going through some serious financial trouble. Does anyone know what happens to our policies if the company goes under?
I'd rather not reapply for new policies elsewhere as we have been paying our premiums for five years and we are locked at a good rate.

Hi,

I work for AIG ... your policies are completely safe. Do what you continue to do which is pay your premiums. All insurance policies are protected through legal entities put in place for all those who take out insurance.

The life insurances are in a totally separate entity from the rest of AIG. Don't worry about all the hysteria perpetrated by the media.

I don't know the answer to that, all I can say is that I"m in the same boat with having our life ins policies through AIG. I've been watiing to hear, but haven't had the nerve to call my ins guy yet. I'll be very angry at him b/c honestly he's the one who convinced us that having a good name company was the safest way to go. I would be interested if you get any info.

Well, my retirement funds are with AIG, my 401K. I am not worried, I know they are protected!

As per Channel 2 news last nite, the funds in your policy are segregated & protected by law. If anything AIG would be purchased by another company that would take over the policies. Therfore, just the name of the carrier of your policy would change. All else remains the same.

I heard on the news that policy holders should not worry. There are a bunch of checks and balances so that coverage stays in place. I would imagine that you will hear from the company themselves.

Hi R., We are all worried about the stuff that is going on. I have no answer for you but you should check about your policies. That would be a shame to lose 5 years of payments. Grandma Mary
