AC Question?

I would call for a second opinion from a different company. Some AC companies are pulling peoples legs in order to get them to feel like they have to do all this pricey stuff to their unit. If you have replaced it just recently it should have came with a warranty.

Try cleaning them first. There is a chemical you can get at a hardware store called KO Dirtblaster. Read up on it & try it before replacing them.

Okay interrogated my husband. They should last much longer than three years. My old ones lasted 10 years and since it was all builder grade we just replaced the whole system when they went.

So far as freezing up that tends to be caused by lack of air circulation. In other words your blower is not functioning properly or not at all.

Did they actually come out and look at the unit?

Leaking coils would cause lack of cold not freezing.

Oh, just an FYI my husband does control systems that work with HVAC units not the units themselves. He still knows quite a bit about them.

Last summer the computer, we have a duel stage unit, in our blower was fried from a power surge. Our coils froze up from that. Granted they were not damaged but had we not noticed there could have been damaged from them freezing to the point of bursting.

They will freeze when the weather is humid if you have the thermostat set too low and it has to run for a long time to reach the desired temperature.
Usually when your replace the outside or inside unit, it's best to replace both at the same time.

One of the biggest things I see is that owners do not get their a/c cleaned out yearly right before it gets hot so it gets clogged up and backs up and messes up the coils, the walls and everything. Depending on the age and model I would not think you need to change out the coils every year. You should though change your filter every month and get the line cleaned out right before it gets hot.

Our coils froze up last year and as they defrosted the water went under our flooring and rotten out the entire area of subflooring. So, be careful about the coils thawing and try to use a shop vac or something to suck up the water. The coils should last a lot longer than a few years. Most last the entire lifetime of the house.

When our house was about 4 yrs old (we built it), we ripped out everything the biulder installed, including 2 outside units, 2 upstairs firnaces and ductwork. We spent about $20,000 but we've had no issues.

Everything is still under a warranty.

If I were you, I'd check into how much a total replacement would be. Sometimes you are better off just biting the bullet and investing once vs getting something fixed over and over at the tune of $600. Also, make sure you know your service man and trust him.

Our service guy bought the last house we built so we always tell him, we know where you live!! We are friends.

it might be cheaper for now just to buy a window unit. you can get them for about $150

A lot of times the AC will freeze inside if you haven't changed the filter regularly...it's a cheap fix! Change the filter, and it should work again (once it defrosts). Just make sure you change the filter every month! Also, I would get a new repair company...sounds like they're ripping you off.
