How Much Does a New Air Conditioner Cost?

We are at a point where we need to decide whether to repair our 14 year old air conditioner or replace it. We've spent almost $300 over the last two summers on repairs & it now needs another $400 in repairs (it's currently not usable). We are leaning towards just replacing it, but that of course depends on the cost. We have someone coming out Saturday (from Golden Seal) to give us an estimate, but was wondering if any of you have recently replaced your air conditioner or complete HVAC system, which company did you use and how much did it cost? The Golden Seal service tech said it would probably fall in the range of $2500-6000 for a Lennox brand unit. I think anywhere near $6000 sounds ridiculous for our 2200 square foot house! Any advice you have would be great - thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the reality check! Our new air conditioner cost about $1,000 more than we hoped ($3,700) but after three estimates, we're confident we got a good deal from a great installer. Thank you to J.G. for suggesting Energy Services in Naperville. We were really pleased with them!

This may not help now, but in the future....get a home warranty on your property. It costs about 400-500 for the basic plan (per year) and covers these expenses with a $60 copay for a professional visit. We needed a $2000 AC repair this past summer and only paid the $60 when they showed up to fix it. Of course our seller paid $450 originally for the warranty. But we still made out better than the full $2000. We went ahead and renewed it for this year. They will fix what they can and if they can't fix it they will replace it. The warranty also covers some common household appliances. It is well worth it if you know you'll be needing it in the future. You do not have to be a new homeowner either, just search out some companies on the internet and contact a realtor for some information. Most people only get the warranties when they first purchase a home, but you can get it at any time and you can keep it for as long as you want, not just the first year. Well worth it!

We just replaced our furnace and air conditioner. We paid 8200.00. We did choose to go with the highest efficiency to allow us to get the 1500 tax rebate next year. We got quotes from Tradewinds and Energy Services. We chose Energy services even though they were slightly more because they had a much better installation process. I know a pp mentioned 0% financing. They do offer 6 months for one unit or a year if you do both however, BEWARE if you aren't 100% sure you won't be able to pay it off in a year. The interest rate goes up to 29%!

Our house is about 1300 sq. ft. and we are getting a new unit in the next month or two. It is going to be about $3500.00. Our electric bill during the Summer can run over $500.00 a month because our current unit is too small. It runs from about 10am until well after 10pm, all day every day. We are getting the right size for our home and the savings on our elec. bill will make it up in a few years.

We did our heater and air conditioner for about $7000. The "life" of our heater was only 7 years and we were on year 8.5, plus our air conditioner was undersized, and we saved about $1800 by doing it all together.

We had a friend in the biz replace ours but I know it was NOWHERE near $2500! More like under $1000. And it is a top brand. Get at least 3-5 estimates.

We live in NY, but when we built our house, having central AC installed was a $5000 "upgrade" and that was 5 years ago. That is a pretty accurate estimate!

We replaced both ac and furnace and it was a lot but i think you can get and ac for around $2500-$4000 at the most. Look on craigslist also. There are tradesmen on there offering services, usually at a lower cost, but still have warranties and guarantees.

I think it would be on the lower end of that scale. Before purchasing it, get a quote from another heating and cooling company as well. We use Four Seasons, and they are usually willing to negotiate price with us, as well as provide 0% financing. We replaced 1 furnace and HVAC 2 years ago, and our other furnace a few weeks ago. We've always been pleased with them.

We are in TX and we hated the units (2) that our builder installed at our home. The bills were high, they were not efficient at all.

We ripped out BOTH units, upgraded to Carrier high end units, replaced the furnace and venting. We spent about $15,000 CASH . Around here you can get a discount if you pay CASH..not check, CASH....we always opt for that discount.

Since we replaced our units, our bills have not been over $400 in the summer (they previously ran upwards $600 range). Our house is about 4000+ sq ft. We've been very happy that we re-did everything.

In the long run, we saved money by doing it all at once (off season), paying cash and of course the $$ saved on the AC bills.

We spent $7000 to replace both furnace and A/C. That was for very efficient units. We got quotes from $5k-10k(Trane) for our 2400 sq ft home.

We have a 11 yr old HVAC system. We got several quotes & all were between $5000 & $7500 depending on the specs. Our house is 2000 square feet. We will be replacing ours within the next year. Your quote sounds reasonable. Lennox is one of the top brands.
