4 Yr. Old Bulging Bump on Shin

My 4 yr. old has a bump that protrudes from his shin when he's active...running, jumping, climbing. My ped. things it's nothing to worry about. It's about the same in diameter as a penny. I asked her for an order for an ultrasound just to check it out. I fear it could be a blood clot or something abnormal. However, I'm wondering if my husband & I are over-reacting. I don't want to scare my son with getting the ultrasound done. Has anyone's child had something similar? Again, it only appears when pressure is put on the leg, which makes me think it has to do with his blood vessels. Thanks!

My daughter has one. She has had it since she was about 6, maybe a little younger but not noticed. It is right below the middle of her kneecap. She had an xray done because her knee hurt so bad but nothing came of it all all. But hers doesn't disappear.

I have the EXACT same thing. It only protrudes when I am active (running, etc, or if I stand on my tippy-toes I can make it appear) and is the same size as your son's and in the same location. I have had it since I was a teen and I am now in my 30's. It has not changed in size and my doc told me it was nothing to worry about. If I recall correctly, he may have said it was a fatty deposit? I never had an ultrasound or anything done. How traumatizing would one be for your little one? Weigh the benefits against the negatives, but I bet it is nothing! Mine is just a little annoying and that is all!

- Best wishes

It could be a muscle herniation. I remember that one of my teachers in high school had a couple. I've never heard of it on a 4 year old. I think I would get a second opinion if I was you. I wouldn't be panicked, but I would definitely get to the bottom of it.

Get it checked out for your peace of mind. Ultrasounds are completely non invasive. No trauma involved.

I think you are doing the right thing. Better to be safe than sorry later. It could be nothing...and then again it could be something. Mothers intuition is not something to mess with. If you feel you need to check it out, you should.
