An MRI showed that I have 2 tears in my rotator cuff in my left shoulder. I went to the ortho ped surgeon who gave me two shots. Well it's been a month and I have limited movement again. I can not continue to get shots every month. Any suggestions on surgery. I am afraid my shoulder will not be the same. I have been told to take glucosomine for joint pain but I am allergic to shellfish.

My husband had a bad car accident which messed up his rotator cuff. Our Dr's prefer rehab over surgery. My hubby was in intensive care 48 hrs then started rehab before leaving the hospital. This was 17 yrs ago.

He never had to have the surgery because he was so focused on rehab and avoiding surgery.

He has the elastic pulleys he still used today when it acts up. He was at pro golfer level when this accident happened and he's back to his pro level if golf. By pro, I mean he went to college on a golf scholarship and has played with some if the best pro players on the tour today.

He'd tell you to opt for rehab ( physical therapy) over any shot or surgery

Best wishes

In contrast to the poster below, my boss had the surgery and feels her shoulder was never the same. (And she's TOUGH and did ALL of the therapy & rehab.) She refuses to get the other O. done.
My husband had his done in the Marine Corp...again--never the same.
I don't mean to discourage you...just be sure to get all of the facts and get a top notch surgeon! There are always improvements in techniques, etc., so waiting might not be a bad thing...
Good luck!

Having a shoulder operated on is like opening a can of worms. Shoulder repairs are tricky. You may want to start with PT before jumping into surgery.

If you haven't had months of physical therapy try that first.

My husband had the surgery and he is really glad he did. He hasn't had any problems and is going to have his other shoulder done.

Surgery should be a last resort. If you do it, you should at least be fully strengthened and the tissues repaired (reduced inflammation, increased blood flow, etc.) before you do it so that healing is more quick and more thorough.

PT works for some people, but for others, it just irritates the tissues in the area and causes more inflammation. And it takes a very long time before you know which is which.

There is a better formula than just plain glucosamine with millions of dollars in clinical studies showing it does reduce inflammation and increase blood flow. There's also a new anti-inflammatory that also increases immunity by strengthening the cells, and it's entirely plant based. Both have patents which are very difficult to get on food products but which prove effectiveness and safety. I've seen so much improvement with the first, and a huge boost with the second. A lot of people avoid surgeries of various types but even those that do require surgical intervention have much better success rates, faster healing, and less pain. And shellfish are not involved - anyone with food sensitivities can safely do this.
