What to Do About Low B12?

I have low B12, I've known I had it for 2 years. I've gotten the occassional shot and taken the sublingual B. It was really low again recently. I have been under lots of stress. I went to the doc and got a shot. My question is if you have low B what's the cause, the symptoms you had, and how do I keep mine up? The sublingual doesn't seem to do enough for me. I wasn't doing it every day though.... more like 3 out of 7 days. And I eat red meat.

So What Happened?

I'm still struggling with low B-12. It was 211 when I did the post. I got a shot of B-12 that day, and did the sublingual B12 several times a day. I did start sublingual B-Complex a week ago. However, last week, which was about 2 1/2 weeks after the first test, he re-tested my levels which were at 299. Which is not good. I went in today and he gave me another shot, and gave me a prescription for the nasal spray and told me to come back in 2 weeks for another test and another shot. He doesn't know why my B is low, but he said it really just needs to be treated.

I worry about long term effects of having low B... but encouraged by the poster who's Dad bounced right back. Thanks and if you have more ideas, email me!

I use sublingual - 1 tab morning and night. Otherwise I get pale, exhausted, depressed / guilty feeling, and nauseous.

Have you noticed any foods giving you problems - gluten intolerance, especially? In some people, gluten (the protein found in bread) can inflame the walls of the intestine so that nutrients do not absorb correctly... diarrhea and bloating seem to be the big signs in adults who have not been diagnosed. Intestinal worms can also cause B-12 deficiency.

I am also low B12 and this is what I have learned about it.

30+% of the population is heterozygous (have one of the genetic defects) for the MTHFR defect, which has to do with the body's ability to use B-12 in the methylation cycle (which helps produce energy for our bodies, as well as other critical systems), due to low levels of the enzymes necessary for this process.

Folks that are homozygous (two of these genetic defects) are the ones that have heart attacks at age 40 - likely because their homocysteine is very high. Anyone with low B12 should watch that closely. As far as testing for the defect, my doctor warned against it for my kids due to potential future insurance issues. And, since taking B12 can help with the problem, you can just do that as a preventative - there no issue with toxicity of B12 - you'll pee out the excess.

So, folks like us MUST take additional B12, however, it is highly unlikely that we can absorb it in the gut. Thus, sublingual can be a good choice (either liquid or tablet) for some, but for those of us that have likely been deficient for decades, we need a whole lot more. B12 shots work for some (I don't like those due to high cost and aluminum as a preservative). So, I make up a transdermal B12 solution (doctor approved) - I mix 10,000 mcg of B12 (I just empty the capsules) and 4000 mcg of Folate (folate is very important here as well and a red flag that you have this issue is abnormally high levels of folate in your blood) along with DMSO (20 ml) and 10 ml of distilled water. I save the brown bottles with glass droppers from the herbal tinctures that I use regularly. You could ask a pharmacist if you can buy such. I then apply a dropperful to my inner arm and it gets absorbed. DMSO is used for horses (primarily) to treat muscle aches (pain and inflammation) as it is readily absorbed through the skin (DMSO is di-methyl sulfur oxide). I need to do this everyday periodically and then at least weekly or my levels will drop dramatically. And, I do take a very large dosage sublingual tablet daily and I will take the sublingual liquid when my energy drops. Also, if you take extra B12, you really should take the activated forms of all the B vitamins - they are very synergistic. And, most of us deficient in B12 are deficient in all B vitamins, but few doctors measure those.

The use of DMSO is controversial:
http://www.dmso.org/articles/information/muir.htm
but again, my doctor is totally cool with my usage (she even asked for my recipe). IMHO, the concerns are likely due to big Pharma and the fact that B12 shots are very expensive - as well there are pills that have B12/folate combo (those aren't cheap either). My recipe costs $5.00 per month - you would likely pay that much in one month.
Also, this is such a very, very small amount of DMSO that the potential for ANY side effects is miniscule. I have done this for 5+ years and had only positive results. The big caution is that you can't make big batches - the B12 breaks down in the solution over time. But, a bottle typically lasts me 3 weeks or so. This is also so critical to me that I even take a smaller bottle when I travel (appropriately labeled).

Note, also for your son, there's lots of autistic MDs that use a very aggressive B12 protocol with very positive results - B12 is crucial for the nervous system (as well as well as many other critical processes - again based on the methylation cycle). Here's one good one:
http://www.autism.com/ari/editorials/ed_b12.htm

One thing I have learned in all my research over the past 5 years is that our children's health issues are also very tightly coupled to our own - they are subject to a mother's environment for 9 mos and then they live in a similar environment usually at least for the 1st quarter of their lives. Also, kids are born with a store of B12 and that usually is depleted by age 7. That's when my health issues started as a child and my kids health both went further downhill thereafter. So, they both get lots of B vitamins daily (again the active forms/co-enzymated are better).

Wow girl you have a LOT on your plate! Stress for some reason causes people to lose B-12, I don't understand completely the medical reasons behind it. I suffer and have for years from this same dilemma. I tried the supplements, including sublingual tabs, never could get the levels up and to stay high enough. I have no idea why. Finally went to a specialist and after much blood work I am getting B-12 shots. The problem is your body does not manufacture or store it so you need to replenish it frequently and regularly. Some bodies just don't process it apparently. Anyway, I now have a prescription and give myself an injection every month, regularly, it does help! Don't wait any longer, insist on the bloodwork, an MD or GP can run it and if they won't prescribe the shots ask to be sent to a specialist! I really do feel a difference in so many ways, like today I'm really tired and kind of irritable - tomorrow is my regularly scheduled day for the B-12 injection! I can always tell now. Good Luck to you.

I also have a B12 defiency. I found out about 2 years ago when the left side of my body went numb. My neurologist discoverd it a B12 defiency. My husband gives me a shot once a month,( a perscribtion given by my Doctor). After deal with this for two years, I can recognize when my B12 gets low. Extreme Fatigue, numbness, some chest pain, and I have a hard time concentrating. If you have concerns I would speak with your doctor and find what best works for you. Good luck.

I have low B-12 as well and I do not know the cause. All I know is that my body does not absorb nutrients well. If you look at my iron count, the iron is sky high but I am anemic per the readings. I don't get that. I take the sublingual B12 now (not like I should). During pregnancy I took injections of B12.

I'm not good at taking pills (they upset my stomach) and I get off track very easily. I love the hormone patch. I wish the supplements were that easy!!

I'm also on extra doses of Vitamin D and Folic acid.

A few months ago, I started drinking at least 1 Danactive first thing in the morning. I have noticed increased energy, my nails are growing for the first time ever. According to my Dr. the Danactive is helping my body absorb the nutrients it needs. I like the Danactive so I have a habit of reaching for that little container daily.

I don't know if the Danactive is what has helped me but recently my CBC was better than ever after I had been on it a while. For now, I am sticking to the Danactive and doing the best I can to get the supplements in my system on a regular basis.

Good luck!

My father-n-law jsut bottomed out on his b-12 and the doctors could not find out that b-12 was the problem. He started with normal alzhemiers symptoms but in just a few weeks we were about to admit him to a nursing home before we discovered the b-12 problem. They started b-12 shots but and he is doing incredible but does have some brain damage from the defficentcy. We are very happy now with how he is doing...he went from the beginning of forgettign who were where and barely sleeping and eating to forgetting how to hold a fork and where to go to the bathroom. After a few weeks of shots he is back to driving again. Jsut stay on top of it. You diet may not be enough. If you are starting to lose sleep and to worry uncontrolably... You need to check your levels. Good luck!

There are B-12 patches also.

Some B-12s are better than others in terms of quality. Also, most people do better using a B complex sublingual spray instead of straight B-12.

Ask a good chiropractor or MD WHY (what is the root cause) your B-12 is so low. I understand that sometimes it can be due to a digestive problem called gut dysbiosis which usually means the flora is out of whck and you are unable to utilise what you ingest through your digestive tract.

Stress can be magnified if the gut flora is not balanced since 85% of Serotonin is produced in the gut. Amazingly, Pharmaceutical Companies get us on antibiotics which throw off our ability to produce neurotransmitters like Serotonin so we wind up with anxiety and Depression and on other products like anti-depressants. Good marketing-LOL.

Some questions the doctors might ask would be if you'd been on antibiotics since you started the low B-12 stuff. Liver issues can also come into play for certain chronic conditions. Do you have Hep C or anything like that?

Mary B's answer as to the cause is very thorough. The best delivery method for vitamin B12 is an intra-oral spray, by which the body absorbs 90-95% through the lining of the cheeks, compared to only 75% in an injection and even less sublingually. To learn more about fast acting adaptogen sprays (Zest is the formula for a natural burst of B-12) and watch "The Story of Adaptogens Documentary" 10 minute video, go to VitalHealth.TunguskaMist.com

80% of all health issues are directly related to stress, according to the American Medical Association. Adaptogens can help get rid of the negative effects of stress on the body. I also highly recommend an incredible book titled Adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief by Winston and Maimes. From the book "There is a category of herbs called adaptogens that help the human body adapt to stress, support normal metabolic processes, and restore balance. They increase the body's resistance to physical, biological, emotional, and environmental stressors and promote normal physiologic function".

God Bless!

Good morning T.!

I have a botanically based skin care, health and wellness company.

We have a number of products that will boost B12. We have an energy drink that has a lot of B12 in it. We also have a protein shake that helps with B12. So in addition to getting B12 you're also getting a number of other vitamins and minerals.

Please let me know if you'd like more information.
