What Happened to Reese's Peanut Butter Cups??

Ok, this is a very specific semi-rant, but I have to get it out.

We bought a big bag of assorted Halloween candy, and I just opened it up and dumped it all into my big orange Halloween bowl (yes, it IS in fact too early to get ready for the trick-or-treaters, but I couldn't resist). Upon surveying and judging the colorful assortment of scrumptious candy bar miniatures, I decided to sample a Reese's peanut butter cup. I unwrapped it, looking forward to the nostalgia about to wash over me, took a bite, and WHOA!! THIS is not the peanut butter cup I had when I was a child!!

While the proportions of chocolate to peanut butter are spot on, the peanut butter itself is salty. And the sides of the cup are no longer tall and solid enough to withstand a bite, but the thing BENT when I took a bite. How disappointing. I understand that they did away with the old time wrappers that had the little white cardboard and neatly folded wrapper, but something's different. I haven't had one for years, so maybe it's just me. At least I know there will still be peanut butter cups in the candy bowl come Halloween! :)

What do you think? Love them or hate them? Have they changed??

Cheryl, exactly!! I loved biting the ridges off! So glad to know I'm not alone! :)

Oooh, I wonder about the 2-pack. I will have to try those again at some point to compare.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I suppose it's possible my tastes have changed..but the texture is still off. I'm going to test it on my husband tonight..will update later. :)

**Update: Ok, gave hubby a peanut butter cup. Nothin. "Tastes like a peanut butter cup." Great. Glad I made my point. Grrr. :)

My husband's all time favorite candy.
BUT he insists that the singles differ from the 2 packs, and the singles that come in 8-packs differ from the singles in the bag......
Papa knows his Reeses.

Most of our old time favorites have not only changed but also have gotten so much SMALLER! I hadn't had a Ding Dong in like 30 years and bought a box and was so excited and was like WTH???!!! I know for sure they were not that small when I was little! So disappointing...

Disagree..I eat these pretty regularly (they're one of my "everything in moderation" treats) and they taste exactly the same to me as they did when I was a kid. I wonder if you just got a lousy batch?

That is my favorite candy. I think the 2 pack ones are better than the miniatures. Like some posters put, it could be that your tastes changed. there are things I loved years ago and now can't stand.

I think I had a 2 pack Reeses not to long ago and it was still the same. Now, I have to go out and buy some to see if they did in fact change.

Sorry I don't have an answer. But thanks a lot (sarcasm!) -- Now that you're brought it up, I can't get that Reeces PB cup that's in the fridge out of my brain! Mmmm. Gonna get off the computer for a minute or two and go gobble it up!

I guess I do have an answer -- I think the packs and size makes a difference. And putting it in the fridge may make a difference for you too. Give it a go.

I think it's a combination of things.
They've changed sizes a bit.
And I've noticed my sense of taste has changed a lot with age.
Several times I've tried things like cereal or candy I LOVED as a kid and thought "Yuck! What was I thinking? This is HORRIBLE!".
But then I like Brussels sprouts now when I couldn't stand them when I was a kid.

I learned years ago how easy it is to make your own candy. And with the changing quality of tried and true favorites it makes sense to make your own. Here's a recipe for Peanut Butter Cups:

Hi L.,

Every company is using cheaper ingredients now and, of course, the texture and taste will change. I've noticed this too. As a matter of fact I could eat several and enjoy them and now one is about all I can stomach. Hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrups, and those ingredients that stretch the recipe are here to stay I'm afraid!

I wonder if you can still poke a hole in the middle? When I was a kid I used to love to stick a hole in the middle b/c I think they did it on a commercial somewhere. I haven't had one in ages! Now I want to go try one :-)

I think they have changed a lot of candies, and other foods too, from what they used to be. I used to be able to melt milky ways and snickers in my baked apple desserts, but now they just don't melt at all like they used to. I think companies are making things much smaller and cheaper than they used to. So many foods now aren't actually food anymore! Sad.

they are different from when I was a kid, no where near as good. personally, i prefer (if they even still have them) the sam's choice peanut butter cups, they come in a medium sized bag, not individually wrapped. the chocolate is a tad bit thicker and the peanut butter is much more smooth and creamy. I used to buy them several years back. they were soooooooooo good to take a bite of the PB cup and then a sip of milk at the same time....YUM!!!!! obviously you couldnt use them for halloween, but as a tasty treat for you they were fantastic..now I think i'll have to look for them the next time I am forced to go to wal-mart.

The individual two packs are better than the ones in the mixed candy bags. Oh, and the holiday special ones - like the halloween ghosts and christmas shaped ones, that come single, are great - thicker and more peanut buttery.

We just tried a bag of the new unwrapped mini-mini cups - they are quite fun.

Yep, they are still one of my favorite candies. Probably because we are peanut butter holics.

MMMM, now I need candy !!!!

I remember last year having one and thinking that it was smaller than it used to be. Don't remember a change in taste though.
