Hi Moms, I'm going on vacation next week to Mexico...whoo hoo! Fully paid for by hubby's company...even better. I have a very nice wedding set and I recently bough a "fake" engagement ring to wear to Mexico, I'm leaving my real set home in my moms safe. I'm wondering if anyone else has ever done this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am already wearing the fake one and saw my friend on Sunday and said "look at my fake ring I got to wear to Mexico". She was like, why are you doing that? Now she knows what my real ring looks like so I had to say, "well, Mexico is not the safest area and I don't want to risk it getting stolen". She said, well, its insured isn't it? Ya, but its SENTIMENTAL and I don't want to have to replace it. So she kind of made me feel like a weirdo or something. My husband also has a very nice ring and now I'm thinking maybe I should get a sterling one for him too!!! I always err on better safe than sorry and I love my rings and don't want anything to happen to them! Thanks mamas!!!

All the jewelry I own is "fake"! ;-)

The room I stayed in recently in Mexico had a small safe in the room. Very handy for keeping passports, cash, or any valuables in.

Yes, I have a fake ring for vacations and outdoor activities where I don't trust wearing my real one. For me, it is not so much the monetary value but the sentimental value! I thought I'd lost it once and I just cried because of what it represents!

YESSSSS!!!! I have two examples of this: My sister in law spent her first years of marriage in Sout Africa as a teacher with her husband. They did not want to take any items that might be worth more than the body part they were attached too, so they purchased, in South Africa, sterling silver matching rings to wear...at less than $10 each. If it got lost or stolen, no biggy. They could walk down to the market and get another. I also had a classmate ( i use that term loosely--she was old enough to be my mother, but inspiring in starting a new career and so vibrant!) who also went travelling alot, some of it to Mexico. She and her husband did the exact same thing. Left things here is safe deposit boxes and purchased inexpensive rings in silver in Mexico that were culturally designed. now she wears it more than her expensive set, but becuase it reminds her of that trip. I think it's perfectly acceptable and protects the things you want to keep safe. I would do it. Definitely, without a doubt.

Whenever we go to Mexico we leave all our jewelry at home. People have been killed for less there. Why risk it?

My daughter went on a 'girlfriends weekend' and wore her $5000 wedding set and lost it. It wasn't insured and they are still paying for it!!!!! Ya she should have left it home :-(.

Yes! My friend traveled overseas for a few weeks and bought el cheapo jewelry to wear. I thought she was crazy at first but her mom said Americans have a tendency to get targeted and robbed in some of the places she was going.
I guess this is more common than I thought.

Oh yes!! I have two different "wedding" rings I sport. One I got at a local department store for $20 and another one off of Overstock.com for $30. It's amazing how many people actually comment when I wear them believing they are real. I guess it doesn't matter what you have on your ring finger, people think it's real.

I have never done that. I always wear my real stuff. I only wear my diamond, wedding band, diamond studs and rolex.

Hubby has always told to me hand it over if robbed that I am insured.

I will tend to turn the diamond in so it can't be seen sometimes because it is pretty large.

You have a good idea though.... something I might try!!!

I wore my real set, and used the safe in the hotel room and didn't wear it when I left the resort. We were right outside Cancun at a resort and I felt more than comfortable leaving them in the safe.

When I worked in a jewlery store our customers did that ALL the time. One customer called that her "summer jewlery." Some were real, some were fake.

There's some GREAT sites like www.inspiredsilver.com and Kolh's

I bought a HUGE ring and 99% of the world thinks it's real because I worked in a jewelry store. I guess it's 'how' you wear it.

Mexico...I wouldn't wear a THING. TOOOOOO risky!

I've done this MANY times. I'm sure the chances of getting robbed are small, but other things can happen on vacation, too, and why take the chance of losing your precious jewelry. Leave them home and wear the fake stuff. Plus, it's kind of fun to have some different "bling" to wear on vacation. I would never trade it, but the "diamonds" in my fake wedding set are way bigger than my real ones! Enjoy your vacation.

I'm not sure what the point of this is. Why don't you just skip the jewelry altogether while you're on vacation? You could still get mugged or attacked for fake jewelry just as well as real jewelry. After all, I would think your personal safety should be your primary concern, not the cost of a piece of jewelry.

It is not uncommon, however, if you buy a totally huge "fake" ring, instead of just costume jewelry, you will be targeted just the same. So if you do buy fake stuff, just make sure it's not too over the top to draw undue attention to you. Have fun!!!! :)
