I have two boys a 18 month and a 3 1/2 month old. I have been experiencing for the last two weeks very tiredness. I get home from work at 12:30pm and I feel overly tired. I feel like I am not getting any rest. My husband lets me nap when ever I want. My milk supply seems to be decreasing a lot. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get energy back. I really don't like feeling like I always need to sleep.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone that has replyed. Everything that you have told me is very helpful. I do believe that I am not getting enough water during the day. I will start here and if this does not work I will go to the Dr. and have my TSH levels checked. Also I though oh my goodness I can't be pregnant again so soon, so I took a test and it is negative. Thank goodness.

I would get your TSH levels checked. That is a very simple blood test. Hypothyroidism is actually very common, especially among women, and extreme tiredness is one of the common causes, as well as a lower metabolism. It is easily treated once diagnosed. That really helped me with my extreme tiredness!
Good luck!

I know you have heard it already but get your thyoid level checked. Mine dropped super low after my second child and I kept saying it was the new baby and my toddler causing the fatigue. I let it go way to long and my milk dried up and had lots of other problems. Hope this helps.

Hi S.,

Make sure you are getting enough sleep (trying to live on 6hrs is not going to work with 2 kids and a job) and of course eating right. If you go to bed for eight hours but you are waking because of the baby or other reasons you are probably not getting enough. You also might need ask your husband to share more of the household duties. If there are other responsiblities that you do, you might need to give them up for awhile. If you're not feeling better after a few weeks, you really need to visit your doctor. Hope this helps.

Hi S. G,

How odd that I work for HP too. In Colorado Springs? Hee. You're probably in my department.

Anyway, I think you are also the person that said you are losing a lot of hair. And now you're tired. Not to go into too much detail about my own roller coaster ride with this, but has your doctor run a thyroid check on you?

Lots of moms experience temporary hypothyroidism post-partum. The hormones will do that to you - and losing your hair, extreme exhaustion, dry skin, depression, irregular periods, mysterious aches and pains in feet and joints - all coupled together could mean that your thyroid isn't working properly. I went undiagnosed for over a year - ask for that blood check NOW!

Your TSH levels could vary but don't let the doctor tell you that 5 is normal, either. People can experience these symptoms when TSH levels are anywhere above 1. Good luck and let me know how you make out.

Sounds like your a busy mom. I'm not sure if this may be the cause or not. But often when our bodies aren't getting enough protein we tend to get tired. So you could try eating a little more protein. I love the protein shakes, because they're low in calories and have a good amount of protein. My favorite is ON. It actually tastes yummy! Usually health food stores have a lot of variety. You are suppose to be eating as much protein as you way in grams. Eat about 30-40g in one sitting. Anyways, I hope I was help. Good luck and go take a nice nap!

Hi S.,

Since moving to Denver 2 years ago, I can't stress enough how important it is to stay hydrated. Our 14 year old son was severely dehydrated to the point of hallucianting, headaches and bad dreams along with fever. Announcements are made at Pepsi Center about altitude sickness and how it can come over you all of a sudden. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
If you start drinking the prescribed amount of water and do not feel better after a few days...you might want to ask your doc to check you for gestational diabetes...That can make you uncommonly tired.

Perhaps the following will stress the importance of water:

WATER
1. 1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for
almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.
9. If you have chronic headaches or migraines, suck down a 20oz bottle of water at the onset!!! It helps to lessen the pain (if you follow that with Gatorade or Pedialite it will help even more!!)
Hope you feel better soon!
Cath
